Iceland’s tiny Vík í Mýrdal village exists in the shadows of one of the country’s most dangerous volcanoes. On this leisurely self-guided walking tour, you’ll stroll through its compact village center, past modern attractions that showcase Iceland’s volcanic heritage, to the dramatic black coastline where folklore and geology collide.
Starting at the red-roofed hillside Vík í Mýrdal Church (Víkurkirkja) that doubles as an evacuation point during volcanic emergencies, you’ll head into the heart of Iceland’s southernmost village. Along the way, I’ll share both personal connections to the area and fascinating insights into how nature has shaped life here for centuries.

The lovely church of Vik is the startpoint of the tour. The church is normally not open for the public, and entrance is not included in the tour.

5.00I have used VoiceMap tours before, and when I visited Vik I discovered that there were a tour available. It was nice, but I would have wanted it to be a round trip. Parking by the church is ideal, but when you have ended the tour at the beach, you need to walk the same way back. Not that it was a problem, but anyway.. Lucky for me, it was good weather, and as I learned about Vik in the app, I could discover other things on my own at the way back - for instance the shopping center. Good guiding with nice information and clear directions in the app. Thanks!
