Ancient City of Ephesus
This enclosure for archaeological remains at Ephesus elegantly reconciles historic conservation with accessibility for visitors. The site of a succession of great ancient civilizations, Ephesus, on the south-west coast of modern Turkey, embodied a peculiarly fertile synthesis of architecture and culture. In 356BC the Greeks built the Artemesium (a colossal Ionic temple dedicated to Artemis the fertility goddess) which was one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. During the 2nd century BC, Ephesus was the fourth largest city in the eastern Roman Empire, famous for its Artemision, the Library of Celsus and its medical school..
The Temple of Artemis
The Temple of Artemis is known as one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. It has been built in the areas of Ephesus on a flat area which has over the centuries turned into a swamp. If you visit Ephesus today, you can only see the ruins of the foundations of this marvelous construction of the Hellenistic Age, entirely made of marble and full of sculptured columns' capitals and shafts. The most beautiful remaining of this temple are today exhibited in the London British Museum. The oldest remaining found date back till the 6th century BC. It was surrounded by 36 huge columns, later enlarged upon the orders of the Lydia King, Kreisos, during the 6th century BC. Most of the exhibits in the London British Museum belong to this period.

What a great tour. We had not planned a tour for this island, but a cruise employee whom we have befriended recommended the tour and convinced us to go. We are so glad that we did. We all believe that this tour will be the highlight of the trip. Nor and our driver picked us up near the dock. We first went to Ephesus. We were guided through The ancient city and were given the history of the main buildings, amphitheater, and learned about the civilization and the current excavation. We were given time to shop in the stores as we exited the site. From there we drove past the of one of the ancient temples and visited the home of Mary. We then were taken to a fantastic lunch where we had a traditional Turkish BBQ complete with many traditional sides and desert. After lunch we stopped at a rug making school where we learned how silk was harvested from the cocoons, wound, dyed, and then turned into rugs. We stopped at a traditional pottery shop where we watched the artists form vases on the wheel and hand paint beautiful pieces. Lastly we stopped at a store that sold every imaginable Turkish delight, olive oil, and other Turkish delicacies. We had Turkish coffee, and then headed back to the ship. The tour was fantastic. Our guide, Nor was great. Her English was perfect, her knowledge of the history of each stop was excellent, and she was very personable. I would highly recommend everyone take this tour and specifically ask for Nor as your guide

This experience is for people interested in learning/seeing ancient Roman city/building, when the Roman empire was very powerful and spread through Europe and parts of Asia. The city/ruins spread over a mile, well preserved with lots of distict buildings worth exploring.

I’m glad our group of 4 did the private tour! It was great having a personal guide to tell us about the culture & to answer any questions we had. Mary’s house & the ancient city of Ephesus were both great to visit & our guide was very knowledgeable. I would have given it a 5 (out of 5 ) rating, but the lunch that was “included” with the tour was basically a sales pitch at a carpet manufacturer that lasted over an hour. We had a “small” plate of local cuisine while sitting on a bench watching carpets being rolled out in front of us. It wasn’t exactly the dining experience I thought I’d have in Turkey! I also am not sure what “skip the line” means? We got in line @ Mary’s house like everyone else (although there weren’t many people ahead of us.) If you’re going during the busy season you may want to verify what that means & skip lunch (if possible.)
