Cabo Santa Maria
We start the tour with a drive through rua pittoreska. This is a drive where we go completely off road. Via this remote way we'll drive up to shipwreck cabo santa maria. The shipwreck has been here since 1968. It ran aground because of human error whilst on their way to south america carrying Churchbells and different kind of cargo. We'll drive up to the mountain. Where we have a spectacular view overlooking the north west coast of the island. We'll walk down hill and into the canyons of Boa vista. It is an active walk where sometimes the terrain is a bit rugged. It is not dangerous or difficult. Everyone with a basic level of fitness is able to do the walk. Via the canyon we'll walk over the black stoned beach. Here you have some time to explore. You can choose to walk to the next stop or to go by car
Chapel of Our Lady of Fatima
After the beach we'll go to the fatima chapel. The chapel belonged to the Benoliel family; the woman was Catholic, so her husband, of Jewish origins, built the chapel in 1923 to honor her. After the family’s death, the chapel was abandoned and completely degraded, becoming an authentic ruin. in 2015 it was restored. It has a beautiful view overlooking Rotchinha and the sea.

We had a private tour with Gil, we drove through the desert where we saw wild donkeys and Gil stopped to tell us a bit of history on the way. We went to the shipwreck took pics and bought some souvenirs from a lovely man on the beach. We then drove up to the Grand Canyon. Gil was lovely chatting and giving info along the way. The canyon is definitely for fit and able people. Hubby was gonna wear crocs but Gil made sure he went and changed into gripped trainers for safety. You start at the top of the mountain and ramble all the way down to the beach. It’s very steep in places, slippy and you have to climb down some sections. It was so much fun and something we’ll remember forever. Gil took photos for us all the way down at picture perfect spots. We then visited the Chapel of Our Lady of Fatima which hubby loved being catholic himself. Gil then took us to a gorgeous little secluded beach where we snorkelled for a while with the cove to ourselves. Afterwards we went for a refreshing drink courtesy of Gil at a little cafe on the harbour, very picturesque. The whole excursion was enjoyable and relaxed, no rushing. Gil was informative, helpful and very friendly. Will definitely do another excursion with him again. Magical memories made. It’s worth waiting until you get here to book excursions with the locals. I would 100% recommend going with Gil instead of TUI as it’s much cheaper and a more personal experience. You’re paying locals rather than a big company. You can’t do the canyon with TUI as it’s only known by locals. Gil was a fantastic tour guide. Thanks so much Gil. Julz + Joe
