Budapest
Meet your guide in Budapest’s Seventh District, a center of Jewish life that is currently undergoing a renaissance as one of its city’s hippest neighborhoods. Delve into this historical district as your guide explains its medieval roots and how it was home to a thriving Jewish community until WWII. Hear how, during the war, the area formed the Jewish ghetto, and how those who survived served as the foundations for the city’s present-day community and vibrant Jewish culture. Stroll the leafy streets past neoclassical houses and synagogues as your guide explains their role in today’s community. Make several different stops at eateries to savor some traditional Jewish specialities. Samples vary on each tour according to availability, but dishes you may try include turos taska, flodni and savory staples such as sausage and goose crackling.
Great / Central Synagogue (Nagy Zsinagoga)
Stop to view some of the Jewish WWII memorials and admire the Moorish-style exterior of the Dohány Street Synagogue, Europe’s largest synagogue. Additionally, check out some of the area’s street art and designer shops that attest to its hip-and-happening credentials.

We toured with George who was very knowledgeable about Jewish history. There were 4 of us on the tour. He took us to the small synagogue and we walked around for about 2 hours with really no stopping. We then had a traditional Hungarian Jewish lunch with wine and then we toured for about another 45 minutes and he said goodbye. While I thought the tour was good, it was not as advertised. We stopped nowhere else to try any drinks or food offerings. Don’t get me wrong, after lunch I wasn’t even a little hungry but the tour I was expecting was more walk a little try something, continue and that’s not what it was. He also did not end where we started. When the 4 hours hit, he said goodbye and it was up to us to figure out where we were. It was a nice tour overall but not as advertised.

She was knowledgable and so considerate. Information included not just Jewish history but also history of Budapest and Hungary. The best experience we could have hoped for.

We had a great experience doing a walking tour of the Jewish ghetto/quarter of Budapest. Our guide Dora was very knowledgeable about the history and food of the area. We visited an both an authentic Jewish coffee shop and cafe for a very nice lunch. We would highly recommend this activity.

We'd toured on a very hot day in Budapest and our guide was prompt, educational and came with water bottles! That just goes to show his thoughtfulness in all things, from explaining the meaning of what we saw to sharing his own family's stories. We enjoyed the matzah cake and especially the lunch with cholent. Went back to theTaste Hungary office to buy paprika too. A wonderful walk back in time.
