While our driver didn't speak English (which we didn't expect!) the tour organizers were happy to help us communicate through WhatsApp. We were able to go from Hanoi to Ninh Binh and make our own itinerary for the day. Our driver was always immediately ready to pick us up at the agreed upon location and get us safely from place to place. It was totally worth it doing it this way over the tours, because we got to go at our own pace.
