Temazcales are a deeply rooted tradition in Mexico and are usually easily found in small communities. However, it is rare to find an authentic temazcal in the heart of the city. Often, the available options resemble more spa or sauna experiences than the true tradition. What sets us apart is precisely having an original temazcal right in the heart of the city. The temazcal, a traditional sweat lodge utilized by various ancient cultures in Mexico like the Mexicas, Mayas, Zapotecas, Mixtecas and other indigenous groups, is typically constructed as a hut or dome made from mud, stone, wood, or branches covered with fabrics, depending on the region. Inside this structure, hot rocks are placed at the center to generate heat, and water infused with medicinal plants is poured over them to create steam that has therapeutic properties and is used for both physical and spiritual well-being. The temazcal serves as a space for purification of the body and mind, connection with nature, and honoring ancestral traditions. Revered as sacred by many indigenous communities, this practice is still use in various parts of Mexico as part of healing rituals. Huitzi, is our main shaman, originally from a small town in Oaxaca. Since moving to Mexico City a few years back, he founded Aldea Tonatzin, a place dedicated to preserving the authentic traditions of the Zapoteca culture. Presently, along with María, his friend and apprentice, they run the traditional Zapoteca temazcal with the goal of sharing the Zapoteca heritage worldwide.

This Zapotec temazcal in the heart of CDMX mountainside was absolutely life-changing. Guided by the amazing María and shaman Huitzi, our family celebrated my 50th birthday in the most meaningful way possible. The ceremony was sacred, healing, and unlike anything we’ve ever experienced. The property was a mesmerizing oasis and organic paradise. Inside the steam-filled dome, infused with herbs and chants, we felt both physically renewed and spiritually connected. María’s enthusiastic translation and our shaman’s experienced guidance made our participation safe, intimate, and unforgettable. If you’ve never done a Temazcal, this is as close to epic as it gets. A must-do in Mexico City, and we will definitely return!

Incredible experience at a beautiful location. Maria and Huitzi were amazing! Highly recommend to start your trip to CDMX. If this is your first Temazcal be sure to dress appropriately (swimsuit and change of clothes)!

Honestly, incredible experience. Convenient location for pickup / drop-off. The ride to the location is not far (depending on traffic). The ceremony itself is wonderful. It will get hot, it will be dark, and when you exit the Temazcal, you will feel born again. Lighter, not only because of the heat and sweat, but energy wise. It is a great cleanse. A reset. 10/10 recommend, I look forward to doing it again.

Maria and Nagual Huitzi facilitated such a unique and memorable experience for my wife and I. Maria picked up the group at the meeting location and it was about a half an hour drive (very little traffic) to the temazcal location. Maria showed the group around the garden, we used the restroom, then changed into our temazcal outfits (swim suit/work out/loose clothing you can sweat through). Maria recommended we take all jewelry off and avoid any clothing with metal on it since it heats up and can be uncomfortable. We then walked through the medicinal herb garden and bundled all plants that called to us. Huitzi interpreted the medicinal plants we chose and what it means for our life. Maria translated so well and so seamlessly. We were cleansed at the entrance of the temazcal where we spent about an hour in a guided experience. When we exited, it was dusk and we were encouraged to take it easy and wander the garden again if called. My wife and I bought a LOT of honey and some fertilizer cultivated by Huitzi at the gift shop. They accept cash or transfer. This was a really moving experience that I’m still feeling days later, I hope we can return! Thank you Maria and Huitzi!

Amazing experience. I went in to the experience without any expectations but I really enjoyed the ritual and cleansing. I love saunas, so this was a whole other level combining spirit and ritual and healing. I highly recommend.
