Meet The Dabbawalas of Mumbai!
For anyone who has ever been to Mumbai, the Dabbawalas are a special class of people who everyone knows! For the uninitiated though – Who is a Dabbawalla?
The closest meaning of the dabbawala in English would be the “lunch box delivery man”
>Dhobi Ghat ( Open Air-Laundry )
(Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat) is a well-known open-air laundromat in Mumbai, India. The washers, locally known as Dhobis, work in the open to wash the clothes from Mumbai’s hotels and hospitals. There are rows of open-air concrete wash pens, each fitted with its own flogging stone. Called the world’s largest outdoor laundry, Dhobi Ghat is a very popular attraction among foreign tourists.
>Why Dharavi is the heart of Mumbai? ( Slum Tour )
Asia’s largest slum Dharavi lies on prime property right in the middle of Indian’s financial capital, Mumbai. Dharavi is much more than a historic area of Mumbai’s poverty. Most of these things are created innovatively, in very small spaces!

This was such a fascinating tour. I can hardly think of a more authentic experience. Our guide was helpful, informative and kind and because he was born and raised in Dharavi we got to really understand the way of life in this truly remarkable place. He made sure we were well looked after and even took us to his home for tea. It was a truly unique experience and I’m very glad our children (10 and 13) got to see how different life can be and really understand how fortunate they are.

Went with Rakesh today on 5-hour tour. I’ve taken many tours and this was maybe the best tour I’ve ever been on. Absolutely incredible perspective into the slum of Mumbai, guided by a local with extremely good knowledge of the city, its culture, and its people. I can’t recommend Rakesh enough - was just an awesome afternoon. Book this and don’t look back

We did a tour with Rakesh covering the Dabbawallas, Dhobi Ghat, and Dharavi slum, and it was one of the highlights of our time in Mumbai. Rakesh was incredibly knowledgeable and provided clear context at every stop, going beyond surface-level facts to explain how these systems actually work day to day. He was also extremely friendly, professional, and respectful, especially in Dharavi, where his approach felt thoughtful and responsible rather than touristic. Highly recommend this tour and Rakesh as a guide if you want a deeper, more authentic understanding of the city.

Our guide Abi gave us a wonderful and educational tour of Daravi and the Dhobi Walla area. The fact that Abi (Abishika) grew up in the slum and was open to our questions and to sharing his experiences made the tour quite special. My grandson and I highly recommend doing this tour with Abi.

I took the Dharavi tour with my teenage daughter, and it was truly one of the most engaging and eye-opening experiences we’ve had while traveling. The highlight for us was the pot-making session, which was not only hands-on and fun but also gave us a real appreciation for the skill and artistry involved. Our guide was informative and respectful, providing meaningful context about life in Dharavi without sensationalism. It was a powerful way to learn about the resilience, creativity, and industrious spirit of the community. My daughter was completely absorbed in the experience—it sparked some deep conversations between us afterward about culture, privilege, and the importance of understanding different ways of life. Highly recommended for families with teens or anyone looking to go beyond the typical tourist attractions and connect with the human side of Mumbai.
