Oh my goodness just book this tour. You will learn so much that you could not learn from walking around on your own. Renato gave a very personal account of how his family lived in the caves and the transition from cave living to modern living. Renato is informed, funny and makes Matera come to life.

This tour with Gaetano was the best tour I've ever taken! The level of his knowledge was outstanding, as an historian actively researching and preserving the knowledge of the old way of life in this ancient city, before those with memories of it are lost. His connection to the city is deep, having grown up nearby, as is his passion for sharing his love for the city. I wish all tours were like this.

Informative tour. The guide Gaetano was passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. He managed the large group very well and injected humour where appropriate. His local and social history knowledge is exemplary and so he is easily able to inject anecdotes and real life examples into his commentary.
