First of all, the experience begins with the boat transfer where the team will be happy to welcome you, at the reception pontoon of your hotel, or at the Vaitape quay. Once you arrive on the motu Taufarii, you will be given a fun introduction to the fascinating history of the Polynesian black pearl, and to pearl farming techniques. Then you will board the boat to discover, while snorkeling, near a coral garden, strings of oysters in their natural environment. The oysters are dived to a depth of 1 meter, and with the team, you will be able to browse the lines of oysters, and choose your own oyster to harvest! The luckiest among you may also have the opportunity to observe manta rays! Upon returning to the motu Taufarii, our team will proceed with you to open the oysters to reveal the precious black pearls! The experience ends with the tasting of local fruits and fresh drinks, in a sublime natural setting, with a breathtaking view of the lagoon and Mount Otemanu! Everyone will leave with the pearl collected, in a small sand bottle, or in a velvet pouch. And finally, everyone will be brought back to the meeting point.

We had such a great time on this pearl diving tour! It’s super informative on how pearls are made and we loved being able to dive for our own oyster. You also get to continue selecting oysters until you get a black pearl, so everyone leaves with a souvenir. Would recommend!

Since French Polynesia is known for their black pearls, I felt we had to do this tour for at least the experience alone. It was a great way to spend a few hours and you get an extra special souvenir. Tahi (I don’t think I spelled that right) and our boat captain (I didn’t catch his name) were so friendly and welcoming and made it a fantastic experience! They were so funny and provided good vibes the whole time. For the oyster choosing, you get to dive down and pick out your own oyster. It is fun waiting in anticipation to see if your oyster has a pearl! Don’t worry though, if you don’t get one the first time you can pick another oyster. Or in the case of my husband, the fifth oyster held his pearl. Also, our guide said that the Westin is cursed and pretty much any Westin guest has multiple oyster rejections. Soooo if you’re staying at the Westin, just a heads up. ;) And we were staying at the Westin hence the 5 tries! A great afternoon though and highly recommend this tour to get your own black pearl!

Guides Tahi and Keanu have refined this tour. It was not only educational, but also an indescribable experience due to the positive nature of the two guides. Also the experience of having pearls dipped itself is of course great.

It was very informative and fun. Tahi explains the whole process from start to finish. The opening of the oysters is so exciting; you can’t wait to see what’s inside.

Learned a lot about how black pearls were made and had a blast picking out the oyster and seeing the pearl inside. We ended up with two beautiful black pearls.
