The Elephanta Caves are situated in Western India on Elephanta Island (also called the Island of Gharapuri), which highlights two hillocks isolated by a tight valley. The little island is dabbed with various old archeological remaining parts that are the sole declarations to its rich social past. These archeological remaining parts uncover proof of occupation from as soon as the second century BC. The stone cut Elephanta Caves were built about the mid-fifth to sixth hundreds of years AD. The most significant among the caverns is the incomparable Cave 1, which estimates 39 meters from the front access to the back. In plan, this cavern in the western slope intently looks like Dumar Lena cave at Ellora, in India. The principal body of the cavern, barring the porches on the three open sides and the back passageway, is 27 meters square and is upheld by lines of six sections each. Elephanta Caves are an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Elephanta Caves
Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a collection of cave temples predominantly dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. They are located on Elephanta Island, or Gharapuri (literally "the city of caves") in Mumbai Harbour, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) to the east of the city of Mumbai in the Indian state of Mahārāshtra. The island, located offshore about 2 kilometers (1.2 mi) west of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port, consists of five Hindu caves and a few Buddhist stupa mounds that date back to the 2nd century BCE, as well as a small group of two Buddhist caves with water tanks.

Boat trip and short tour of caves/carvings dedicated to Shiva

4.00We were collected promptly in a nice car with good driver who dropped us near the port where we met Riya, a very pleasant young woman with good English who knows a lot of history of Mumbai. She explained about the Gateway and kindly took photos. She escorted us both ways on the boats (which are quite basic and busy). It’s about an hour each way. We hadn’t realised it was a special festival so the island had ten times as many visitors as usual! The little train that runs from the port was not in operation either because of the festival, a bit of a pity. We were then given a guide by Sam, a local man. He also bought us a cup of the sugarcane drink which we appreciated! There is a climb up very steep uneaven steps to the caves themselves and I was pleased to have trainers on! On a hot day I could see this being pretty challenging for some. Sam helped us skip queues and took a few photos for us. He is clearly knowledgeable but speaks very quickly and was a little hard to understand, and we did feel a bit rushed. I would have liked to have lingered longer and taken more photos- he kept moving off and leaving me behind! We probably only had about 45 minutes looking at the caves/carvings. He also seemed keen for us to get through the market stalls and visit his cousin’s shop- we made a purchase and I think probably paid over the odds. He did pressure us slightly to write a review before leaving the island too which we declined to do. We then had a short wait in a bar with him while Ria met some other guests from the boat who Sam was guiding next. As usual I found seeing starving and ill dogs on the island very upsetting, its a shame the authorities don’t do more to help these poor animals- it does not give a good impression to visitors either. As in much of the city the island and surrounding waters have a lot of litter which is a shame- as someone who litter picks back home I find it astonishing how blind people are to this, especially at. World Heritage site. This isn’t a comment on the tour per se, just a general observation. After boat trip back (where other travellers did their best to hand feed seagulls flocking the boat!) we had to visit a souvenir shop while waiting for our driver (apparently this helps him get free parking). There was some pressure to buy although not too bad. The streets are crazily busy and we were glad to have our guide, I think it would be very overwhelming (though much cheaper) to do it independently. The whole trip took about six hours for really only about half an hour or so looking at the carvings themselves, and cost us over £100. Not my favourite trip ever but Ria was lovely and it was nice to get out of the city, experience the water and see the beautiful carvings.

5.00Met and guided on ferry, 50mins. Mr Rajat met us on arrival. Very informative, leant a lot and he took great pictures of us for us. Respectful courteous and thoughtful, a great afternoon trip. 2pm departure got us back at lit up and busy Gateway about 7pm

5.00We had a fantastic experience with our guide Rajat at Elephanta Caves! He was extremely knowledgeable and explained the history and significance of the caves in a very engaging and easy-to-understand way. We learned so much about the sculptures, temples, and the rich cultural heritage of the site. He was also very helpful and made sure we found our way around smoothly, which made the visit both easy and enjoyable. On top of that, he kindly took great photos of us throughout the tour, which we truly appreciated. We felt well taken care of the entire time, and it was clear that he is passionate about what he does. Highly recommended to anyone visiting!

5.00We had a fantastic experience with Rajat as our guide. From the very beginning, he took great care of the whole group and made sure everyone felt included and comfortable throughout the tour. He shared the stories and history with genuine enthusiasm, which made everything much more engaging and memorable. Rajat also went above and beyond by taking wonderful photos of us. He made sure we got great shots without too many tourists in the background, which we truly appreciated. We are very happy that we chose to explore with a guide. It gave us so much added value and a deeper understanding of the history and significance of the places we visited. Highly recommended!

5.00Rajit was an excellent guide for the caves, and was incredibly knowledgeable about all of the history, the carvings, and the machine behind all of the imagery. He also helped take wonderful photos showing tremendous angles and views of the caves. Tremendous guide and tour!
