Teotitlan del Valle
Teotitlán del Valle, in Oaxaca, is famous for the elaboration of handmade wool rugs using ancestral pedal loom techniques. What makes these rugs stand out is the use of natural pigments extracted from local plants, minerals and insects, such as cochineal, pomegranate and indigo, which gives them vibrant and long-lasting colors. This tradition, passed down through generations, reflects the rich Oaxacan culture and respect for the environment. Visiting the town is an excellent opportunity to learn about this artisanal process and purchase unique rugs made by the talented local weavers.
Hierve el Agua
We explore the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua, where we will spend two hours and thirty minutes to first take a walk around and then refresh in the natural pools that store water with great mineral content. During the hike you will appreciate the different views of the set of waterfalls that exist in the place. You will also find small water springs that give life to the petrified formations. The most amazing part of the place is at the bottom, where you can appreciate the fall of the waterfall and from its base you will be able to capture the best pictures for your memories. When you come back from the hike you can refresh yourself in the pools area or just take the time to meditate and contemplate the beautiful landscape, which is surrounded by mountains that are a magnificent backdrop to the site.

We did a day explore with Eric and Liz and we had a really great time exploring and learning about Oaxaca's culture and how pre-colonial history is still part of their current culture. The tour team was great, accommodating us though we ran a little late. Hierva El Agua hike was great, though a little tough on the way back, but other than that it was good.

Liz and Eric were wonderful! Liz did a great job energetically describing detailed information between stops in English and Spanish. Eric was a safe driver. All of the stops were terrific with the waterfall/pools and mezcal maker being my favorites. A very full day. Thank you!

Our tour was lead by Arturo and Pavel. They were both affable, conversant guides. I especially appreciated that between destinations they gave historical and personal context to each site. The entire trip was also very comfortable—thanks to our driver, Eric—and our lunch at Donaji was a pleasant opportunity to try several classic Oaxacan dishes.

It was a great time to hierve el agua. We started with an hour hike for spectacular pictures, then took a dip in the natural springs filled with the same minerals that created the petrified waterfalls. We also visited Tule, Mitla & a mezcal distillery. Only improvement is where they took you to eat afterwards. I assume it’s one of the few places that could hold that many tourists at one time but nonetheless a great time. Be sure to bring a towel & dry clothes along with a swimsuit.
