Some destinations are beautiful. Some are historic. Very few are both - and almost none come with a story that no one else is telling.

Belene Island sits in the middle of the Danube between Bulgaria and Romania. In a single extraordinary day you will stand where Roman soldiers controlled the frontier of the Empire, step inside a church that became a shrine to martyrs executed for their faith, walk through Bulgaria's most significant communist-era labour camp, and watch Dalmatian pelicans glide over Danube wetlands.

But here is what makes this tour truly unique. The communist camp closed in 1989 - yet Belene Island never stopped being a place of confinement. An active prison operates here today, right alongside the memorial park and the Roman ruins. History here is not behind glass. It is still happening.

Maximum 8 guests. Guaranteed from 1 booking. The only tour like this from Sofia.

Note: passport copy required at least 48 hours before departure - we arrange your permit.

Belene

Stop 1 - Belene Town: Roman Customs House Dimum and Catholic Church Location: Belene town, northern Bulgaria - approx. 3 hours from Sofia Time at stop: approx. 1 hour Your first stop is Belene town itself - where two extraordinary chapters of history sit side by side. The Roman customs house Dimum, built at the end of the 1st century BC, was a frontier post controlling movement across the Danube at the edge of the known world. Then the Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in 1860 - a shrine to Monseigneur Eugene Bosilkov and three other priests arrested and executed in 1952. Their crime was faith. Bosilkov was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1998. Two thousand years of history in one short walk.

Stop 2 - The Checkpoint: Crossing Into Persin Island Location: Persin Island checkpoint, Belene Time at stop: approx. 10 minutes This is the moment that makes Belene unlike any other tour in Bulgaria. To enter Persin Island you must pass through a formal security checkpoint managed by the Bulgarian Ministry of Justice. An active prison operates on the island today - alongside the memorial park, the Roman ruins, and the nature reserve. Your permit, arranged on your behalf, must be registered in advance. Without it, entry is refused. This is not a reconstruction of history. It is history, still in use.

This tour was so fun, I went with another friend and we had our tourguide Velko pick us up from the meeting point and drive us into the mountain where we trekked up Vitosha. We bought the snowshoes but we did not end up needing them in the end (a shame but can't be helped) as the snow wasn't that deep. The wind was quite strong on the day we hiked and so Velko gave us the options of going to the summit or going around a different way to avoid the wind, so we picked that. Velko was very talkative and knowledgeable and even though it was windy and we had a bit of a white out it was very fun and we all had a good time. We went to the cafe to have lunch and Velko told us which Bulgarian foods to try (they were very tasty) and then we went to the spa which was lovely (although bring your own shoes and towels). Overall we had a great day and the tour was one of our highlights of the trip, I recommend Velko as your guide :)

I was ready for the trip and when I came out, I found that I was the soul traveler for this tour in my guide ‘Velko’ was waiting for me and he made sure that I had the right clothing to be safe and warm. I felt like.’VIP’ not just because I was the only tourist, but Velko was great guide. He is expert on mountains and very professional. He made sure to show me and explained to me everything. He cared for my safety. He even took photos of me.’bonus’. So for me, this was the best organized tour ever that I will remember for a long time.

If you ever wonder which tour guide to chose, I truly recommend Dobrin! He's as good as his name suggests (dobri = good) or even better! He is reliable, punctual, professional, attentive to the gruoup's needs, super helpful, caring and very communicative, just fun to be around 👏 I would not be taking the time to write this if it wasn't all true 😀 Book your tour with Dobrin whenever you get a chance!

Lyobo was an awesome guide. Great workout. Entire experience was other worldly of you've never been hiking in the snow. We went during snowfall so no views of Sofia but even without that it was perfect. The hut at the top served some divine bulgarian soups and meat after making the ascend.

This activity was one of the best experiences of my life. We had a guide called Dobrin he was extremely knowledgeable about the country and patient. We were two females travelling together and he made us both feel safe and secure in his hands. He made my friends Birthday a very special occasions by acknowledging her day and even singing birthday songs. We then were taken to the hot springs which again was so relaxing and peaceful. Dobrin is a safe driver and took care on the road to ensure our safety. I would strongly recommend this activity.
