  • WORST TOUR OF OUR LIVES! Do not book! Company is slimy!

I wish I could give zero stars. DO NOT under any circumstances book with this company! Here is a brief summary of what happened and went wrong for us. If you want to read my full detailed recounting of what happened from start to finish with much further detail, feel free to read what I wrote under this brief summary. My girlfriend and I were waiting at our designated pick up location at 11:55 am as our tour was supposed to start at 12:00 pm. Throughout what would be a long wait, the tour company failed to let us know what our driver looked like, what her car looked like, when she arrived, or anything at all. Our tour guide also never communicated any of that with us. So we were left scrambling to find her. We communicated with the tour company, asking where our guide was, and even tried calling. We didn't get any response until 30.minutes after our tour was supposed to start when they told us that we weren't at the pickup, so the guide left. Not once did they even try and communicate with us, and in fact blamed us for it, when we were in fact at our pickup spot waiting, but our guide didn't even try to look for us. So the driver turned back around and eventually came to pick us up. That was just the start. Another problem you need to be wary of is that despite this being an expensive private tour, this company finds it acceptable to provide a guide who can barely speak English. We had to constantly translate words for her, fill in the blanks, rephrase and repeat ourselves so she could understand us. We couldn't understand her broken english a lot of the time. She also didn't seem to know what she was talking about, several times we asked questions and she either provided no answer, an answer in broken english, or an answer to a completely different question. But by far the worst part of the tour was that after our first stop of the day, she told us to wait in her car because she "had to talk to a lady for 5 minutes". So my girlfriend and I sat in her hot, closed, non-air conditioned car for 30 minutes, not 5. It turns out she wasn't just talking to a "lady", but she was yelling at and having an argument with a park employee, over a problem she had with her on a separate occasion..... After she finished up her heated argument with the employee, she came back to us in her hot car. She didn't apologize but just explained to us that she wanted to talk to that woman because she was pissed about something that occured another time. So she confirmed that the argument wasn't necessary for our tour, but was in fact personal. We asked why she didn't have this argument on her own time instead of on our time during our private tour. She stared at us and then stayed silent as she drove us to our next stop. To say this service was unacceptable is an understatement. We pled our case with the tour company afterwards for them to give us a refund, we'd even accept a partial refund. They refused any refund of any sort as their standards for acceptable service and an acceptable tour are simply picking you up, stopping at each spot on the itinerary, and then dropping you off. Regardless of what occurs during or before the tour. Those are their words exactly. They failed to recognize any wrongdoing, completely sidestepped all accountability, and instead fixated on how it was our fault that they weren't able to locate us. They said because they couldn't locate us at the start of the tour that all of this occured, including their guide's inability to speak english and her leaving us in her hot car to pick a fight with a park employee. They've refused to give any refund and were horrible to deal with. Thankfully, after contacting Viator support and providing them with everything that happened and the proof that we had, they agreed that their service was unacceptable, so we were issued a partial refund on Viator's behalf. Do not book with this company, they are slimy and horrible to deal with. Here is the fully detailed recounting of what happened. If you so choose to read all of it. We set our pickup location to be by the street of the complex of cabanas we are staying at. So around 11:55 a.m., my girlfriend and I left our cabana and made our way to the pickup spot, which was literally less than a minute walk. We get there, standing, and waiting patiently. Looking at every car that passes by, at every parked car and every person in the area. Assuming that they'd be looking for us. Since there were many parked cars in the area, we didn't think to come up to each individual one to investigate where our tour guide was or each person that passed us. We had rightfully assumed our tour guide would make their presence known, try looking for us, or atleast reach out to us to let us know they were here, especially since it's an expensive private tour. One of the people in the general area was a woman who was bent over and talking to an older woman at one of the cabanas. We figured it wasn't our tour guide since she made zero effort to even turn around and look even within 10 meters of her surroundings. We assumed that she must've been friends with the older lady since it's such a small island and everybody knows each other. We saw interactions like that all the time, so we figured there was no way that was our tour guide. Besides, we didn't want to be rude and interrupt two strangers in the middle of a conversation. They never broke conversation. She never even turned to look around, and eventually, she left. So again, we just thought she was a friend, considering she made zero effort to find us or reach out to us. So we're standing there for 10 minutes now, and we started to worry that something is wrong. So I messaged the tour company: "Hello, are you almost here?" No response. Another 7 minutes later, I called, and nobody picked up. Mind you, we have zero information about what our guide looks like, what their car looks like, license plate, nothing. It certainly didn't help that they weren't reaching out to tell us that our guide was there and ready to go, which is what I assumed would've occurred on a private tour. We stood in the sun, baking, for another 10 minutes (it's now been 30 minutes of waiting outside), and we finally get messages back from the tour company. They said: "Hello Aidan", "guide is here at our office", "She said you were not at your hotel", "Were are you at exactly", "?", "??????". We responded by telling them our location (which is the same as where we had put in viator) and included a screenshot of google Maps to show. It goes without saying that it is beyond ridiculous that our tour guide was apparently there, made zero effort to find us, didn't message us at all, and then left. On top of the tour company providing zero information on our guide, whether she was there or not, or even getting back to us when we tried reaching out to them a couple of times. Finally, we get a message from our tour guide, which came from a separate phone number. She said "Hello", "Im your guide, im going for you again", "Please send me your location", "I will be there in 5 min", "Yissell". I once again sent our location, a screenshot of our location on google maps, and pictures that I took from where we were standing. Just to be sure that she had the right place. A few minutes later, she messaged me, letting me know that she was here, what colour her car was, and sent a picture. Which is what we wish she had done from the get-go. Once we met with her, she was not at all apologetic but was insisting that it was actually completely our fault and that she was here. I told her that I never heard anything from her or the tour company and that we had no idea she was our guide, since, as I said earlier, there are many parked cars in the area and many people walking around, so we had no idea that she, who was talking to an older woman the entire time and never breaking off that conversation, was in fact our tour guide. My girlfriend and I are obviously very frustrated at this point, but we decided to bite our tongues and to try and enjoy the tour, even though we were starting 45 minutes late now and it had been awful. So we got into her car, and we both realized that our seatbelts we jammed into the car. I imagine it's because nobody on the island wears seatbelts, including her, but we wanted to for safety. We had to wrestle and legitimately fight the car just to get our seatbelts loose, I'm talking a few minutes of fighting the seatbelt while she's driving. We eventually got our seatbelts free and buckled them. But that was just before we had to stop at a gas station.... For some reason, she didn't get gas for her car and for our tour on her own time. Throughout the drive to the gas station, she kept reiterating that it wasn't her fault about the pickup and that we all suffered from waiting. By the time we stopped at the gas station, filled up, and left, it was now 55 minutes later than our scheduled start time. But once again, my girlfriend and I tried our best to remain optimistic about the rest of the tour. We finally made it to our first stop of the tour, and my girlfriend and I noticed yet another problem, she can barely speak English. We are paying hundreds of dollars for a private English-guided tour, and yet our tour guide had a barely above basic understanding of the language. She was very slow at communicating, had a simple vocabulary, and often times didn't understand us when we asked questions or even said something. We had to fill in the blanks for her multiple times, teach her words, such as "chicken coop" which she struggled to come up with for almost a minute and instead called it "a kitchen". We also had to help fill in the blanks and translate on her behalf for words such as "resources", "chin", "hair", "rope", "hole", "stage", etc. I could go on for a long time recalling every single instance in which she couldn't come up with what to say, and we had to do the filling in for her. So, not only was her vocabulary pretty much basic, but we had to repeat ourselves countless times and rephrase our questions/statements so that she could understand. It was incredibly frustrating. All of that would continue throughout the tour. She couldn't speak English well, didn't understand the language well, and seemingly didn't know much information when it came to any of our questions. Sometimes, she wouldn't even answer a question because she either didn't know what she was talking about or she just couldn't even come up with the right words to answer. For example, she stated that archaeologists discovered that the Moai statues were in chronological order. We asked her how they found that out, and her answer for us was "archeologists found out they were in chronological order. ".... So she just re-stated what she said, not answering the question or giving an explanation. So now we are about wrapped up at our first stop, and she tells us to wait in her car because she must talk to a national park employee at the entrance. She insisted she'd just be 5 minutes. So, my girlfriend and I quickly reapplied sunscreen and waited patiently in her hot car, baking in the heat. Turns out it wasn't a quick 5 minute chat, but rather a 30-minute aggressive verbal altercation. We could see that both our tour guide and the park employee were yelling at each other and using aggressive hand gestures. After waiting 30 minutes in her hot car, she finally came back and didn't even apologize for the wait. So I asked her what happened and what took so long. She explained that she had a run-in with that employee on another tour and wanted to talk to her about it. Not once throughout her explanation was it clear that it was a necessary conversation to be had in order for our tour to continue. So instead of on her own time (like fuelling her car), she decided to take time out of our private tour to take up this problem with her since we were conveniently already there. She rambled on for minutes about the situation, and we remained calm and empathized with her until she was done talking. Once again, she never apologized about the 30 minute wait inside of her hot car, and for the fact that she chose to deal with this during our private tour time. Once she finally finished rambling, my girlfriend calmly asked, "we are wondering why you chose to deal with that situation now instead of on your own time?" Her response was pure silence, and she remained silent all the way until our next stop. Making it a very awkward car ride. Once we got to the next stop, she started talking again. We started walking around the Moai factory, and she tried to explain some of the details of the Moai heads. But we weren't able to get much information out of her. It was yet another example of her inability to communicate and understand what we were saying. She was trying to talk about the chins of the Moai heads, but she struggled to come up with the word for Chin. When we told her the word was "chin," she didn't seem confident. So then we weren't sure if she meant chin or facial hair, so we asked if she was talking about the chin of the staute or if it was facial hair. She looked at us, puzzled, and straight up said, "I don't know. "... even though she was the one who brought it up and started talking about it. Another question she didn't answer was when I asked how the statues were moved from the mountain. She told me in broken english "they put them in ho and bring up", I had to ask her to repeat herself a couple of times, I had to correct her English and fill in the blanks to find out that she was trying to say 'they put the statues in a hole and pull them up with ropes' which funnily enough still didn't answer my question about how they moved the statues from the mountain. Instances like that occurred countless times throughout the day, so I won't get too longwinded about it. But it does once again express the very, very, frustrating day we had. It felt like we were the ones teaching her. For the rest of the tour, we were constantly translating for her, filling in the blanks for her, repeating ourselves, rephrasing our sentences so she could understand, and left with either no answer or horrible broken English answers. We had to do a lot of our own research, and find answers to our own questions we had on the tour because we left the day with only a little bit more knowledge than we came into it with. By the end of the tour, she kept asking us if it was a good day and a good tour, backing us into a corner and pretty much forcing us to say that it was a good day. Which was both weird and awkward as she was the one driving us home, especially with how many times she asked, so we felt obligated to tell her that it turned out to be a good day. It also felt like she did that to let the tour company know we said we had a good day in case we were to complain about the tour. To say the tour was awful is an understatement. We have receipts to back our claims about the day. Of course, I have screenshots from all of the messages that were exchanged with the tour company and our tour guide. As well as videos we took to back our claims about the tour guide, including a full video of her rambling on about the fight she had with the park employee, and confirming that she left us in the car to pick this fight. The video ends just before my girlfriend asked her why she chose to do it on our tour instead of on her own time. We also documented our wait in the car and her fighting with the employee with multiple videos. This company believes that all of this is acceptable, and sees that they have provided the tour that they were paid to do. DO NOT BOOK!

Be prepared to walk in areas of uneven ground. Well supported hiking shoes and hiking poles would be good aides. This tour covers everything you always heard about Rapa Nui including a refreshing stop at the Island's most beautiful beach for refreshments of all kinds. I would have like to give this tour a 5-Star rating, but while our guide was quite knowledgeable, it appeared that he lacked a passion for his work. Papa Nui is a beautiful and magical place, and it deserves to be presented with pride.

Mana took us on a great private tour. Importantly, he made it work for our two kids (13 and 8). He tailored the itinerary to suit us, he got the kids engaged, kept things brief and active but still taught a lot of the history. I'd highly recommend him for anyone with kids (but he'd be great for anyone)

The tour itself deserves 5 stars, but the guide (Jaime) was an absolute disaster. Had we had Simon (from Pukao Moai), as a day later from the same provider we would definitely have given 5 stars here as well. Jaime had shortened the day trip to a half-day tour and simply deleted jobs/points from the program. So if you take this tour with this company (which unfortunately do not sit on the island, so all complaints about the Nua Hare Boutique Hotel runs) The tour points are definitely recommended! But if does not do this with Jaime or book directly with Pukai Moai Tours!

We booked our trip with Kapua very last minute and they were incredibly easy and flexible in our planning. We had one day with a cruise ship tour and wanted to venture out on a private tour for the second day. I let Kapua know where we had already been and then they were able to customize a day for us at other sites. Our guide was Annette Rapu and we cannot say enough good about her. She is an educator by profession and by nature. She has taught Rapa Nuil language and culture and shared so much with us. She has met Thor Heyerdahl and knows everyone on the island as well as the history and customs. She is a descendent from the 111 people that were left on Rapa Nui in 1888 and could explain how the island has re-built since then. Each location we visited had a special place and meaning in the Rapa Nui culture. We could not have asked for a more attentive or thoughtful guide.
