Amazing experience. From the beautiful views of the desert/mountain terrain to the colors of the Colorado. The guides were very informative, experienced and attentive. GPS may say it takes about an hour and a half drive from LAS, but it was about 45 minutes. It’s a worthwhile day trip.

It was great and more than expected but still amazing in every way possible. Water was definitely colder than expected but since it was so hot water felt amazing

Because the regular launch point was closed by the park system, River Dogs chose another launch and coves to visit. It was too windy and the river, wide like a lake, was whitecapping with 2-3 foot waves. Our guide cut our trip short, but other groups with the same company too a risk and tried to hit another cove. That group struggled to get back and required multiple guides to go help ppl who capsized and struggled. The guides were paddling themselves without any power aid. We waited about 2 hrs in the sun and heat. They should have canceled these trips. The kayaking was a struggle. If conditions were better it seems like they were prepared with good safety plans, snacks etc but our day was more bust than Success. 😩 Before the trip they were excellent communicators. So bad launch point, rough wind and water and long waits, oh and a tough van ride made for a less than stellar day. Haven’t heard from then since. I’m sure the operators were beat and frustrated too, but before you go make sure that the optimal conditions are in place.

Our experience was moved to a different location the night before due to a washout of the access road to the Willow launch point. Jeremy, the owner, reached out the night prior to notify me of the change and to offer an alternative route package. I found out later that we were the first group that had been on this route. Although I enjoyed my experience, this version was not well suited for amateur kayakers. The water was very choppy and we ended up having to be taken back by a guide (either in a tandem kayak or tethered to a guide tandem) because it was too difficult for us. The wind just kept getting stronger and stronger, making paddling up river back to the loading point too dangerous for inexperienced kayakers. I have no idea if that wind situation is normal for that stretch of the river but if it is, the description definitely needs to be updated to reflect the skill level required. Having said all of that, I still enjoyed the experience and was very impressed with the responsiveness of the staff and their attention to us. I wouldn’t recommend this version of the experience to others but, based on what some of my fellow kayakers said, would recommend the original Emerald Cove experience.

Unfortunately the trip we had booked which was river kayaking to the emerald cove was changed last minute with very little notice. We received a text advising us that the launch area was inaccessible due to a mudslide, the text did not tell us we were going to a totally different area, we did not find this out until we were on the minibus. We were taken to busy Lake Mead, lots of motorised craft making waves with lots of diesel fumes. It was also quite windy on the lake which made the kayaking harder, it was not the pleasant, calm experience I was looking forward to. Our guide Julia did try her best to engage people but no one in the party was in a very good mood due to the situation. I wish the company had just been transparent with us and told us we couldn’t go on the original trip and either offered us a full refund or an alternative day. Very disappointing when we had travelled all the way from the UK.
