The best thing I have done in Bali. If you want an authentic, beautiful and nourishing week do the Tree to Sea Trail. The guides and team are so welcoming and friendly and the scenery is stunning.

This walk is highly recommended for anyone who wants to see the ‘real’ Bali. We enjoyed the beautiful nature, the lovely people, the delicious food, the walk and the activities around it. Super well organized. Fine guides. It really is an immersion in Balinese life. In short fantastic!

I cannot recommend this experience enough. We did the 'Tree to Sea' 6 day trek and it was an incredibly rich, beautiful and profound experience. I have lived in Bali for 3 years and wish I'd done this in my first few months. The depth of understanding and appreciation you gain is immeasurable. We started our hike at Kayu Putih (the giant, ancient banyan tree thought to be over 700 years old) and finished at Pantai Seririt on the northern coast. We hiked through rice paddies, leech-infested forests, along the Balinese subak (the ancient irrigation system found all across the island) and through plantations of organic clove, nutmeg, durian, banana, vanilla, coffee and fields of hydrangea flowers. Simply put, this is THE way to see the beating agricultural heart of Bali. You stay with local farmers who spend every day close to nature, working with their hands in the soil. You eat incredibly delicious, locally sourced vegetarian food with no preservatives or processed elements. You learn Balinese crafts such as weaving, calligraphy, cooking and kecak dance. Our guide, Tona, was so knowledgeable and could answer all of our hundreds of questions. The organisers, Upi, Merry and Candra made us feel so welcome and comfortable and we were treated like family the entire time. I am SO glad I did this before I left Bali, as these memories from the Astungkara Way trail will stay with me forever. 💚

A life-changing experience I can’t say enough good things about this trek—six days walking through Bali with an incredible group, thoughtful guides, and meaningful cultural exchanges. Every day brought something unforgettable: waking to the sound of a waterfall, eating passion fruit right off the trail, collecting food from the land for our dinner, and even rescuing a small owl. The guides were not only knowledgeable but also deeply connected to the land and the communities we visited. I learned so much about the flora and fauna, local traditions, and spiritual practices from our guides and our generous host families, whose gentle wisdom truly touched my heart. We were welcomed into homes, invited to cook traditional treats, and shared stories during fireside chats. What set this experience apart was the sense of belonging—it never felt transactional or touristic. Whether I was laughing with new friends, learning about wild edible plants, or sitting quietly in awe of nature, I felt connected to something bigger. This was more than just a trek. It was a deep dive into the land, the culture, and myself. I left feeling lighter, more grounded, and full of gratitude. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to step out of their comfort zone and into something beautiful. I’ll be reimagining my future travels to include experiences that truly connect me to the communities I visit. I think it will be hard to find something quite as unique as this. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Words and pictures can not adequately describe our Astangura Way (AW) experience, but here is just a taste. We signed up for the Tree to Sea trek (June 4-9, 2025) and expected to enjoy nature, walking, and learning about Bali. But the journey was much, much more than that, making connections with the wonderful AW staff, the local partners and families, the food, nature and its abundant offerings, the culture, and our fellow "pilgrims". We were greeted daily with such warmth, openness, and the desire to share the Balinese life, food, and customs. A very full 6 days with trekking in the forest and rice fields, seeing waterfalls, eating from the land and local partners' homes, learning Balinese dance, music, cooking, and crafts, participating in a water purification blessing/ritual, sleeping comfortably each night in nature, being educated about regenerative farming along the way....... There really is no better way to experience Bali, and I encourage you to open your mind and heart to this amazing opportunity. Special shout out to the knowledgeable, patient, and kind Tona and Palupi who were with us the whole way and to all the other AW staff and partners who opened their homes and lives to us. I hope to see you all again one day, astungkara!

The 6 day Tree to Sea trek with Astungkara Way exceeded anything I could have imagined. It’s hard to describe just how powerful and emotional this experience was—from the stunning natural beauty to the incredible people we met along the way. The kindness, generosity, and spirit of the Balinese people moved me to tears more than once. They live in deep connection with their land and community, and it was a gift to witness and be part of that. We spent six unforgettable days walking through jungles, rice fields, mountain trails, and remote villages. We learned about regenerative farming, harvested spices, made traditional foods, and shared meals and stories with local families. I felt truly immersed in the culture—and connected to something bigger than myself. A huge part of what made this experience so meaningful was the Astungkara team: Oka, Upi, Merry, Tona, and Gede. Their warmth, knowledge, humor, and care touched my heart in ways I’ll never forget. They made us feel not just welcome, but like family—I truly feel like I’ve gained new family members in Bali. If you’re looking for an experience of a lifetime—one that will stay with you forever—this trip is absolutely for you. I recommend fully immersing yourself in the journey and saying yes to every opportunity Astungkara offers to participate, learn, and connect. You won’t regret a single moment. Astungkara—God willing—I’ll return someday.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who would like to get away from the hectic city life, learn about traditional Bali, its culture and farming while eating delicious food and hiking through idyllic landscapes. The Astungkara Way team is very kind, attentive and fun. They will take excellent care of you every moment of the trip. The whole journey is just as described, the accommodation is comfy but basic, there will always be a „fresh“ shower option, definitely enough delicious food and varied activities besides the daily hiking. A big thank you to Astungkara Way! Much love to all of you 💚

We came to Bali looking for something different from the party beach scene our daughter had experienced — something deeper, more authentic — and we absolutely found it with the Astungkara Way. The walk itself winds through the very heart of rural Bali — rice paddies, primary forests, and tiny villages untouched by mass tourism. We learnt so much about the landscape and Balinese culture. On the first night, we stayed in a traditional Balinese home and cookery school, where a local woman showed us around, taught us to cook Balinese food, and shared stories of village life. Before long, we were all sharing a meal we’d helped prepare, drinking local spirits, and joining in traditional music and dancing. It may sound a bit Eat, Pray, Love, but it was a truly immersive, enjoyable experience! Sleeping arrangements were simple but thoughtfully done — mosquito nets hung over mattresses on a sleeping platform, surrounded by the sounds of nature (and the occasional snorer — bring earplugs!). Each day brought a new guide, a new lesson, and a new part of Bali to experience — from extracting coconut milk to participating in a water purification ceremony that turned out to be incredibly moving, despite my initial doubts. We hiked to waterfalls, explored forests, visited sacred places, and met very friendly locals. Some days we foraged and ate right from the land with guidance from our hosts. The Astungkara Way team was incredible throughout — always ahead of us with our bags, meals, and warm welcomes at each destination. The food? Always local, fresh, and delicious. The journey ended at a beach on the north coast in Sereirit, where we had a final ceremony. It was the perfect close to what felt like a spiritual and cultural journey — not just a hike. If you’re looking to connect with the real Bali, far from the crowds and clubs, Astungkara Way is the way.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Our experience with Astungkara Way was nothing short of amazing! Huge thanks to our wonderful guides—Oka, Upi, and Ditro—who truly made this journey unforgettable. They shared their deep knowledge about Balinese life, culture, and traditions, offering us a rare glimpse into what makes Bali so special. One of the highlights was learning about sustainable farming and how closely it ties to Balinese identity. From the fields to the table, everything we tasted came straight from their farm, and the flavors were absolutely incredible. Beyond the delicious food, we left with a deeper appreciation for how food is grown, consumed, and its connection to the natural world. It was both eye-opening and inspiring to reflect on how we can live in harmony with nature. If you’re looking for an authentic experience that goes beyond the surface of Bali, I can’t recommend Astungkara Way enough. This is more than a trip—it’s a chance to connect with the heart of the island and leave with new insights about life and sustainability. Thank you, Oka, Upi, and Ditro, for such a meaningful and enriching adventure! 🙏✨

I have just completed the Tree to Sea 6 day/5 night trek, what an amazing way to see the ‘real Bali’! With a fantastic team of people sharing their passion for a more sustainable future, and the partnership network of local families and their businesses, the walk goes way beyond promoting Regenerative Farming! All the crew genuinely love the role they play in revealing the true culture of the Balinese people and their way of life. Combined with a great group of travellers from around the globe, some of the best food you’ll eat in Bali, and perfect overnight ‘camps’ in some pretty amazing locations! The walk could be challenging at times, with some pretty tricky terrain (I walked in the wet season, our group ranged from 10 to 50 years old) but the knowledgeable local guides always made sure our path was safe, and anyone with reasonable fitness would be able to jump into the Sea on day 6! If you’re thinking about it, do it!
