Get the chance to visit the site of Herculaneum being guided by an Archaeologist.

Get to know more about this ancient Roman city, inhabited by merchants and nobility, whose life ended dramatically fast in 79 AD. The guide will show you the waterfront where more than 300 remains of people trying to escape by sea were found, but also the Samnite house, the thermal baths, the Temple of the Augustales, the forum, the house of Neptune and Amphitrite, the Gymnasium, the house of the wooden partition and much more.

You will get an intense experience: you can see not only stone, marble and ceramics left, but also carbonized wood and even more exquisite paintings and mosaics than in Pompei.

Herculaneum was destroyed by a much more powerful force which instantly burnt all wood and buried the city under a thick layer which didn’t let the air go through and cause decay.

Dogs are allowed at the Herculaneum Archaeological Park without breed or size restrictions, however they must be kept on a leash or muzzle and it is mandatory to have bags to collect any droppings. For reasons of logistics and conservation, within the Antiquarium premises, the Boat Pavilion, and the domus featuring mosaic floors, access is permitted only to dogs that are carried in arms or transported in an appropriate carrier.

Meeting place is the Ticket Office of the Herculaneum ruins. You can get there as follows: - By car in via Pignalver (There is a not guarded parking very close the meeting place) - By train in Corso Resina 1 (Circumvesuviana train station is 10 minutes walk away)

We had such a great time at Herculaneum with our guide Luciano. What a lovely man- he was very entertaining and funny but also very knowledgeable about the site and he did a great job of showing us the highlights and telling us lots of interesting details/ pointing out stuff that we’d definitely have missed if we’d been on our own. Our group wasn’t a huge one, but the earpieces worked really well and Luciano made sure that everyone could see and hear everything clearly.

Antonella brought ancient history to life with her tour- we learned a lot but it was never dry. Any visit to Herculaneum would be greatly diminished without her.

I did the guided tour in Italian with the guide Camilo. Very didactic, polite and worth the visit. Details that only with guide can be perceived as the explanation of the different types of constructive, the difference between the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, etc.

While a smaller excavation than Pompeii, Herculaneum is equally as interesting. Residents there died due to different circumstances (no spoiler) and the remains have a different appearance. Diego, our archeologist guide was very detailed in his presentation, and we covered a lot of area in three hours. He clarified what life was like prior to the eruption, and how comprehensive was the initial construction of the city. Diego was personable and professional and we greatly enjoyed our experience.

Less known than Pompei but of extraordinary conservation. Lots of objects and woods were discovered and visiting with an archaeologist guide was for us really a choice that we did not regret and we strongly advise.
