My husband and I traveled with three other couples for a ten-day trip to Japan that Becki and Shawn guided us through, and the trip was truly perfect. My husband and I have traveled a lot, and we have never experienced guides as professional, knowledgeable, and fun as Becki and Shawn. Because they are American expats living in Japan, they have a tremendous depth of practical and cultural knowledge about Japan, while understanding how to help American’s adapt to make their Japanese experience more meaningful. Almost a year before we left, they asked us to complete a survey on what sights and activities we wanted to experience. They then combined our individual desires into one group itinerary that was great for all eight of us. Starting a few months before, we received advance emails on what to pack, how to prepare, and some basic survival Japanese. We had an hour long Zoom call for any last-minute questions. By the time we flew to Tokyo, we felt very confident and prepared. Our itinerary included Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Nagoya, Nara, and Kyoto. During the trip, they took care of all the exhausting logistical details, like navigating the complex transportation system, checking into hotels, restaurant reservations, tickets at shrines, etc. The hotels they chose were very comfortable, beautiful, and near shopping. Just as importantly, they gently guided us in Japanese etiquette as we moved through the subways, trains, elevators, and restaurants of Japan. As we went through the week, they shared their deep knowledge of Japanese culture and language. My husband and I wanted to get off the tourist trail as much as possible, and our itinerary included some incredibly beautiful places that we would not have found on our own, like the Nakasendo Trail near Nagoya, a textile museum near Fuji, and both a private kaiseki dinner with a young Geisha-in-training and a tea ceremony in Kyoto. We also visited the more known shrines and temples, too. My favorite day was at Mount Fuji |at a Ryokan. We visited the Itchiku Kubota Museum, a place we would have never found on our own, which contains the most beautiful textile art I’ve ever seen. That night, after some time soaking in the onsen in our ryokan, we had an amazing multicourse kaiseki dinner together. Most importantly, Becki and Shawn are very accessible. They were with us most of the time, but were available through Whatsapp for any questions, and went out of their way to make dinner reservations for us on our free nights or to answer questions.

Becki and Shawn made our trip to Japan an unforgettable experience. They provided insight into the culture, handled logistics seamlessly, and personalized a wonderful and energetic itinerary. We saw so much beyond the main attractions and would never have been able to do this on our own. Becki and Shawn are kind, fun and knowledgeable, going out of their way to have us experience special moments, delicious meals and travel on trains stress free. They are fantastic leaders and kept us organized and on time. This was one of my favorite vacations! I can’t stop talking about the trip!

We just finished a 10 day trip. A trip on our own would have been high stress , lost in a subway station with a train due in two minutes. With Becky and Shawn we saw and did things we never would have done on our own. I can’t recommend highly enough.

Review for Shawn and Becky Our tour to Japan was absolutely excellent! The itinerary was so well organized—every detail was thoughtfully planned, making travel between cities seamless and stress-free. We experienced so many unforgettable moments that we never could have arranged on our own, from traditional cultural activities to incredible local dining and hidden gems off the beaten path. Shawn and Becki knew the Japanese language and the culture, which made every stop special. Truly a trip of a lifetime!

If I could give this a rating of ten I would! Planning a trip to Japan can be overwhelming, especially if you are well past the hostel years. Look no further than Japan and More to work with you on the trip of a lifetime. This is a husband and wife team, Becki and Shawn, who have lived and worked in Japan for over 20 years. Small group (up to eight) personally chaperoned tours where the vibe is your ex pat friends are showing you the best of Japan at a very (very) reasonable price point. Becki and Shawn gather info from the group before creating the trip itinerary so this is YOUR Japan, which for us included the top tourist spots (Tokyo/Kyoto) as well as the out of the way items (authentic ryokan overlooking lake and Mt. Fuji with hot bath options). Once your itinerary is set, they send you videos and other info to prepare you for Japan. We did a group of eight (four couples, 60s and 70). Hotels are reserved in advance. Hotels were all very nice, clean, safe and well located. All meals save two or three dinners are included and booked in advance. They had a list of suggested spots on the off nights so we could explore on our own. We had a huge variety of fantastic Japanese meals in authentic restaurants. We had a private dinner with a legit geisha. (We exited the tea house after dinner to see tons of people waiting for a even a glimpse of a geisha after we had just spent two hours with one. We got to ask her all kinds of questions and watch the entertainment). Transportation by rail (subway, regional and bullet trains) all booked in advance and all included. Entry fees included to all attractions. Best of all, Becki and Shawn are a wealth of information on Japanese history and culture along with the practical tips (money, safety). From arrival in Japan to the last wave at the airport, Becki and Shawn are by your side, taking the worry out of the trip and allowing you to see so much more than if you did it by yourself or as part of a big bus tour. It was so nice to simply pack a bag and show up, Becki and Shawn took it from there! Can't say enough about this company. Highly recommend!

Review of Japan and More – A Truly Unforgettable Experience We traveled with Japan and More from May 7 to May 16, 2025, and had an absolutely incredible experience exploring Japan. Our itinerary took us through Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Matsumoto, Nagano, Nagoya, and Kyoto, offering a perfect blend of cultural insight, scenic beauty, and memorable activities. The booking process was smooth and impressively thorough. The additional information and prep videos provided ahead of time were extremely helpful and helped us feel well-prepared before even arriving in Japan. Our itinerary was thoughtfully planned and perfectly balanced to suit the interests of our small group. Every day was well-paced, with just the right mix of structured activities and free time. Some standout experiences that really set this trip apart were the Geisha dinner and attending a live Sumo tournament—both unique, immersive, and unforgettable. All of the accommodations arranged for us were excellent, with clean, comfortable hotels in convenient locations. The trip was coordinated seamlessly from start to finish. Most importantly, Becki and Shawn were fantastic. They are a phenomenal team who clearly love what they do. Their attention to detail, knowledge of Japanese culture, and genuine enthusiasm made this trip not just a vacation, but a meaningful experience. We felt supported and cared for every step of the way. I would absolutely recommend Japan and More to anyone considering a trip to Japan. It's rare to find such a well-run, personable, and enriching travel experience. We’ll never forget this journey!

We were looking for an experience in Japan that was like being led by old friends around a country they know well (and about which we knew little to nothing.) That is exactly what we found with Japan and More. If you have a preconceived disdain for tour operators, throw that out the window with regard to Becki and Shawn. From the moment we met them, we were comfortable and at ease. They do not guide the tour...they immerse themselves in the experience with you to the point where you do not feel like you are on a tour. All movement is on public transit or walking...no tour bus. Their largest group size is ten people, including them, which makes the entire experience exceedingly personal. They are just nice people with a passion for what they do. With them, you do not see Japan, you experience Japan almost as if you live there. We cannot envision doing a first-time visit to Japan any other way. We highly recommend them.

Like some of the other posters, I, too, prefer to arrange my own travels. But I felt having no Japanese language or reading skills (as well as left handed driving) made that a bridge too far on this trip. Rather than extol all its virtues and repeating prior posts, I recommend reviewing the company’s web site at length since it does a great job of describing who they are, sample itineraries and how they differ from other tour companies. I say “sample” because, after reserving a spot, you have direct input into the itinerary. Becki and Shawn customize each one to suit the preferences of the group. That alone, is a major difference from other tour companies. But the most significant difference is that Japan and More allows travelers to experience Japan, not merely see it. All six of the travelers on our trip agreed it was best described as a 10 day immersion session in Japanese, food, culture, etiquette, history, and religion. Accommodations were modern 4 star quality. Breakfast was included at each, with a more extensive variety of hot and cold foods (both Japanese and western) than you will find at similar quality U.S. hotels. Shawn and Becki attend to every detail and leave nothing to chance. When visiting a site, travelers can easily go off on their own path of exploration since Shawn provides hyperlinks for directions and recommended shops. Having Shawn and Becki right at hand made train travel simple and no stress.

I was fortunate to experience Japan and More’s 10-day Highlights of Japan tour in Spring 2025. A friend and I chose Japan and More largely based upon the rave reviews we read online, and I am happy to add to those accolades! It was an incredible experience thanks to owners Becki’s and Shawn’s efforts. Their love for Japan and the work they do shines through. They were exceedingly organized, professional, and easy to communicate with throughout the process- from our first contact to our departure from Japan back home. They have a very good way about them, and they quickly made the tour group feel comfortable and welcome. Our group enjoyed varied sightseeing and cultural experiences in big cities and small towns, from making sushi and visiting temples and shrines to hiking in the mountains and witnessing a tea ceremony and annual geisha performance for sakura season. The accommodations they arranged were very comfortable and offered bountiful breakfasts to fuel our days. There was a good mix of meals on our own and as a group, which were at a variety of local restaurants that were (delicious) learning experiences in themselves. I greatly appreciated the cultural and historical insights Becki and Shawn shared with us along the way, so that we could better understand this beautiful country and its people and also be respectful visitors. I returned home wanting to further explore Japan in the future, and I would not hesitate to utilize Japan and More’s tour or consultation services or to recommend them to others.

We couldn't have had a better experience than our tour with Becki and Shaun. From our initial email interaction months before our trip, we were only met with professionalism. We appreciated the copious communication and preparation before our trip. Becki and Shaun sent us useful written information and videos to prepare us for our trip. The information about etiquette were particularly helpful! We also found the pre-departure Zoom meeting a nice added touch. We got to "meet" Becki and Shaun and ask any questions we still needed answered before we departed. Once we arrived, everything ran smoothly. We could tell much planning and preparation went into coordinating the trip for our full group of 8. As for the size of this small group tour, 8 is perfect. We felt we could navigate busy train stations and crowds in a manageable way because of the size of our group. Becki and Shaun had us maneuvering bustling public transportation seamlessly and we always had plenty of time to get from one place to another. We especially liked how we had a brief meeting every morning to go over what we were doing for the day. We also ended every evening with a brief heads up regarding what to expect the following day. All of our accommodations and group meals were excellent. We also particularly liked the emphasis on cultural experiences. We tried several different types of Japanese restaurants and local foods. For example, we went to many temples. a geisha show, a traditional ryoken overnight, dressed in kimono and were educated along the way. Be prepared to walk A LOT! This tour mainly uses public transportation and your own foot power. Comfortable walking shoes and layers of clothing are a must. Pack as lightly as possible because you are responsible for moving your own luggage from hotel to hotel. Becki and Shaun are warm, welcoming and we could tell they love their small group tour business. Most importantly, we could tell they love Japan and are very happy to share this beautiful and unique country with curious and adventurous travelers. We can't recommend Japan and More enough. Book one of their tours - you won't be disappointed.
