Hue Imperial City (The Citadel)

OPTIONAL STOP: Built from 1804 by King Gia Long and finished in 1833 by King Minh Mang. This area was used as living and working quarter for Kings and Royal Family Members of the Nguyen Dynasty until 1945, and was recognized by UNESCO as WORLD CULTURAL HERITAGE. This is a must see place, that not to be missed if you travel to Hue and love to learn about country history and Vietnamese royal culture.

Thien Mu Pagoda

OPTIONAL STOP: Located on the north shore of the Perfume River about 3km from the Imperial Citadel. You can get there by dragon boat along the Perfume River, or for those feeling more energetic, a pleasant bicycle ride. The Thien Mu Pagoda is regarded as the unofficial symbol of the former imperial capital. Today it is the home of the Austin Motor Vehicle which drove Thich Quang Duc to his self-immolation in Saigon in 1963 in protest against the Diem regime. It is still home to many monks and a holy site visited by many everyday.

We had an enjoyable, well paced tour with Nhien who shared her knowledge with us as well as allowing time for us to wander off and explore the Imperial City at various points. This was a great approach and really suited what we wanted to do. She answered all our questions and had so much insight into culture, Buddhism and history that it brought this ancient city to life. The dragon boat trip was just a short ride to the Thien Mu pagoda but nice to travel on the river.

We had a great time exploring the Forbidden City and Citadel today with our tour guide Misa. Despite the wet weather, we thoroughly enjoyed the walking tour. Misa was full of knowledge, sharing lots of historical facts and stories about not only the Forbidden city but the history of Hue and Vietnam. After the tour, Misa gave us some recommendations for food and coffee. Can confirm the recommendations were spot on! Misa’s English was very good. She brought a smile to both of our faces with her sense of humour and kind nature. Would definitely recommend. Thankyou for a great time!

Misa was very kind, her English was good and she told us a lot about history. It was fun and interesting listening to her, we enjoyed the tour a lot, also because it had the ideal duration.

Prompt pickup from our hotel, Duy was our driver, nice tidy clean cool car, he was very friendly, funny, knowledgable, helpful. The weather was beautiful so our dragon boat ride up the river to the Pagoda was delightful, plus we were the only 2 passengers. Pagoda and the Khai Dinh Tomb were well worth the visit. Fascinating history and stunning buildings. Duy stopped by to show us some interesting things including the village where incense is produced. Finally dropped us at a ‘locals’ local restaurant, also great. A good day out, recommended.
