Koprivshtitsa (population: 2400 people) is a charming historic town in central Bulgaria, situated at 1030 m. a. s. l. and lying on the Topolnitsa River among the Sredna Gora mountains. It was one of the centres of the heroic April Uprising against the Turks in 1876 and is known for its authentic Bulgarian architecture and for its folk music festivals, making it a very popular tourist destination. Koprivshtitsa is one of the characteristic Bulgarian towns, still preserving the atmosphere of the Bulgarian National Revival period of the 18-th and 19-th century. The town boasts a large number of architectural monuments from that period - 383 in all, most of which have been restored to their original appearance. Collections of ethnographic treasures, old weapons, National Revival works of art, fine fretwork, household weaves and embroidery, national costumes and typical Bulgarian jewelry has also been preserved. It was here that the first shot of the April Uprising against the Ottoman domination was fired in 1876. Since 1965 the National Festival of Bulgarian Folklore takes place approximately every 5 years in Koprivshtitsa, gathering musicians, artists and craftsmen from all over Bulgaria. Featuring thousands of performing artists in a pastoral setting in the hills above the town, the Koprivshtitsa festival is the only significant Bulgarian music event focusing on amateur performances. In Koprivshtitsa walk along the cobbled stone streets, weaving through an authentic atmosphere from the 19-th century. Visit several impressive house-museums from the Bulgarian National Revival period where one can feel the spirit of the heroic past of this remarkable town. Have lunch in a tarditional restaurant by the peaceful waters of Topolnitsa River in the centre of Koprivshtitsa, followed by a transfer back to Plovdiv. Trip duration: 5.5-6 hours

This was an absolute delight of a day. Kamen was our guide, this is the second tour we took with him, and all we can say is that he went above all expectations. He is extremely knowledgeable of his country’s history and you can feel his delight in showing and sharing this town. The trip started with a drive throughout the countryside, then we saw the town centra square, a history packed bridge, then we saw three very distinctive homes, a church and its graves. We followed all this with a wonderful lunch with traditional cuisine and good conversation, then followed up with two more homes. I recommend this tour if you want to see a traditional and local side of Bulgaria and its culture. Now, if you can go with Kamen, he will turn a great trip to a magnificent lifetime experience.

I was staying at an Airbnb in the Old Town of Plovdiv and my tour guide did well to plan with me where to meet for pickup. The drive was fairly long and very smooth, and it passed by quickly with talk of the history and geography of the landscape and the people who live there. Some of the museums were closed but I got to see the best of them, and my guide did an amazing job at explaining everything. I really got to feel the emotions that were felt in history and how Bulgarians presently feel too. To stand on the same exact site where the first shot was fired was intense for me as it was because of how well the tour was executed. We ate at a very lovely restaurant. I can't remember exactly what my dish was called but I was amazed to see it come out and served on a hot traditional pan. If you're from Britain or any particularly rich country, your money will certainly go a long way in there, and that extends to the whole tour really. The drive back was also lovely and I was dropped back off near where I was staying, and I headed for a nearby restaurant for dinner that was recommended by my guide. Before I left the car, he mentioned all that I had missed due to them being shut so I certainly felt I had seen the best parts of it at least. I very highly recommend this tour. It's the most positive and memorable day of my whole short trip to Plovdiv, and Plovdiv was already wonderful.

Fabulous tour with Kristian to this charming, virtually intact 18th and 19th c village nestled in the Sredna Gora mountains. We spent a very pleasant day meandering through the cobbled stoned streets and visiting the Revival houses. Kristian's grasp on the complex history of the town, where the fight for national independence began, was excellent. We enjoyed a delicious lunch outdoors at typical Bulgarian restaurant and the tour end with a short hike up to the Monument of Bulgarian Independence with sweeping views over the valley. Highly Recommend!

We had a great time with our guide visiting Koprivshtitsa. He did a great job of the guided walk, sharing a lot of the history in an interesting way. He also recommended an excellent restaurant for lunch and suggested traditional foods. Overall, it was a great day!
