Construction began in 1934 after a visit to Brazil by the Cardinal-Patriarch of Lisbon, who was reportedly impressed by the imposing image of Christ the Redeemer on Rio de Janeiro. At 110 meters high, the Cristo-Rei Sanctuary became a historical reference in spirituality during the first half of the 20th century. Currently, the monument is a place of prayer and a beautiful viewpoint over the capital. There are those who say that the statue was built in fulfillment of a vow formulated by the Portuguese Episcopate that asked "to God that Portugal did not participate in the Second World War". The Cardinal affirms, before the crowd, that this monument will forever signify the gratitude of the Portuguese people for the peace that had been offered to them. This monument, is one of the biggest and iconic symbols that enhance and decorate the metropolis. The construction of the Portuguese empire required that the entrance to the Tagus be properly protected and ensure a military rhetoric translated into an effective and dissuasive defense system. Its grandeur and importance should have been enough to send a clear signal to the other European powers and their fleets that the river was protected and under control. In this way, under the direction of King D. João II, the defense of the mouth of the Tagus river was organised. The system conceived at the time was intended to ensure coverage of the Tagus bar by artillery fire, which represented a significant technological advance. The place chosen for the building of the main defense of the bar, to the north and south, would have to be located at the precise point where the Tagus is narrowest. 5.00João gave us an amazing tour of the city, including many of the places where "tram 28" goes and a trip across the bridge to view the "Christ the King" monument and lunch(our cost) at a seaside restaurant. Before the tour he asked us if we had any places we wanted to see. Our tour listed as a 6 hour tour but we ended up with a 8 hour tour. Our tour started at 8:30 am so we did not take him up on his offers of different alcoholic drinks until later in the tour. We did eventually taste some ginja (sour cherry liqueur), almond liqueur and vinho verde. He provided us with more information than we could absorb. He covered everything from history to architecture and traditional foods. He introduced us to the famous custard tarts. He capped the tour off by making a reservation for us to enjoy some Fado music.

5.00Our guide was amazing. Great way to be introduced to Lisbon. He had a lot of knowledge of the history and architecture of the city. Great charcuterie and wine, including a treat from his family‘s vineyard. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone coming to Lisbon

5.00We booked this as a fun, spontaneous addition to our trip instead of the Tuktuks and WOW were we happy we did. The tour guide was informative, fun and flexible. This tour has everything: views of Portugal you didn’t know existed, local wine, cheese and pastries, and a knowledgeable tour guide! A group of three 26 year old girls had the time of their lives and would recommend it to all!

5.00Had a very nice trip with Joao. He picked us up at the hotel and showed us Lisbon we were also allowed to give ourselves digen aa what we wanted to see. On the way stop occasionally for something to see and a drink and snack. Dropped off at the door after more than 4 hours. Super fun. Afterwards we were allowed to text him for things. Tried to book us a table at a fado restaurant.
