Plaza Mayor
The name of the plaza has changed over time. It has been known as "Plaza del Arrabal", "Plaza de la Constitución", "Plaza Real", "Plaza de la República" and now "Plaza Mayor". These names reflect events, history and reign in Spanish history. "Plaza del Arrabal" was the original name of the present day "Plaza Mayor". The "Plaza del Arrabal" was once the site of the most popular marketplace until the end of 15th century. Following the Constitution of 1812, all major plazas in Spain were renamed "Plaza de la Constitución". It also held this name 1820 to 1823, 1833 to 1835, 1840 to 1843, and 1876 to 1922. When the Borbón king was restored in 1814, it became known as the "Plaza Real". In 1873, the name changed to "Plaza de la República". At the end of the Spanish Civil War the plaza received its present name of "Plaza Mayor".

Bargain upgrade if you want to tour the palace.

5.00Really good tour. We were keen to visit the palace and found that this tour cost only slightly more than just going to the palace by ourselves. That makes this tour an abolute bargain. Remember being on a tour means you get to go straight in, bypassing the line outside. Our guide (Beatrice) was superb, making great use of the very effectve ear-peices so that everyone could pick up every word. She was both entertaining and informative throughtout the short city walk and the palace tour which made this a lot of fun and a really good use of our time. The palace is really impressive but we got so much more out our visit there by spending the time with Beatrice. We also followed her recommendations for places to eat which were excellent.

5.00Our tour guide David was excellent. We walked around town for a bit and the inside of the castle was impressive. We took the 11am tour and got in before most groups which was nice as there were few crowds.

5.00Beatrice was the best tour guide! She knew so many facts about the city, history, and the palace. She was nice, engaging, funny and handled the large group well. This tour you get to learn more than the just the palace. It was so neat to see all the rooms and know the history behind them
