Famagusta Gate
The Famagusta Gate is the most significant of the gates of Venetian Lefkosia, built in the 16th century, It is the Gate that once opened on the road leading to the most important Port of Cyprus in Famagusta.
Medieval Venetian Walls
This is not a regular city walk, but a passage through a town frozen in time. It will give you an insight into the current situation of the Buffer Zone “Green Line” off the beaten track, on streets that are hard to discover without the experience of a local guide. You will see the Venetian walls and how they form a boarder around the Old City, so unusual that once seen on a map will never be forgotten as a design synonymous with the unique shape of this ancient fortification. On our walk we will explore the Southern side of the city and follow the infamous “Green line” that cuts through the centre, separating the city into southern and northern sections. This division has kept the two major communities, of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots apart for more than four decades. Our journey begins at the Ledra Palace Hotel known in its era as the largest and most majestic hotels of the capital. You will witness life having evolved along either side of this schism, something once impossible to do until recent agreements between the two sides to open border crossings. We will explore Ledra Street located at heart of the aforementioned walled city now once again rekindled to one of the most popular pedestrian commercial streets accented by abandoned buildings reclaimed by nature through decades of lost time scarred by bullet holes, military outposts and barricades.

Eleni really knows her stuff: between her encyclopedic knowledge of Nicosia and her personal experience and warmth, I learned so much about the troubled past of the city and the current state of affairs. But most important: Eleni was generous with her time and clearly her natural talent for her work doing these visits. She spent extra time with some of the group who wanted to see a few different things while respecting those on tighter timelines. All in all just a wonderful morning in Nicosia, now with a lot of spots to return to.

Fascinating insight into the events of the 1960’s, 1970’s, 1974 and the last implications on the city and country. Easy movement across the border and a very unique story. I would recommend partnering this with a tour of the North.

Eleni was a wonderful friendly Guide. She was highly informative and brought the history and culture of the area alive with stories as she walked us along the buffer zone in Nicosia and introduced us to people and showed their way of life. Thank you Eleni

First up - Make sure you book with Eleni. Second, allow more time than the allotted tour because you will want to go back and see some of the stops again or go on the additional walking tour(s). Yes, there are tours on both sides, so bring your passport. There is so much going on and to unpack - from politics, economics, cultural, humanitarian just to name a few. This tour will linger and make you think long after the last stop.

This was easily one of the most enriching and meaningful tours I’ve ever taken. The route itself is interesting, but our guide, Eleni, made it unforgettable. Her knowledge, passion, and storytelling brought the city’s divided history to life in a way that was both educational and deeply moving. Eleni presented every detail with balance and respect, never shying away from the complexity of the subject. She’s clearly an expert in Cypriot history and international affairs, but what stood out most was how approachable and engaging she was. She created a warm, open environment and encouraged questions throughout. We had some last-minute circumstances on our end - we appreciated Eleni’s flexibility as she handled everything with total professionalism and kindness. If you’re visiting Nicosia, don’t miss this tour - you’re in for something truly special. I would 100% do this tour again.

This was an exceptional walking tour. Longer than anticipated but very interesting and with a nice coffee break in the middle. We had the opportunity to hear lots of personal stories and meet some lovely local residents. A truly memorable experience.

Eleni introduced us to the little story in the great history that Cyprus lived and still lives since 1974, when the Turks invaded the north of the island. Now a buffer zone divides the island in two, between Turkish Cypriots in the north and Greek Cypriots in the south... The visit of the various neighbourhoods bordering the Nicosia buffer zone is a measure of the tragedy that took place 51 years ago, causing the Greek Cypriots to leave their homes, neighbours, shops, schools and places of worship in just a few hours, without ever being able to return to them, while the Turkish Cypriots did the same in the other direction... It is now only the ruins of beautiful houses, sumptuous hotels and deserted streets that once flourished, that Eleni tells through a thousand little details and that makes us understand what these families have lived and are still living. We can only recommend this exciting tour by a passionate guide!

This is a absolute must for all history buffs and those who want to learn more about the oddity in modern times which is a divided capitol in Europa. Our guide Eleni gave us a wonderful tour and shared her personal history from both Nicosia and Verosha, on the 1974 invasion and the unfortunatly partition of the island. She gives you a behind the scenes look in the UN buffer zone, and show how life is close up to the green line. If you are in doubt, don't be, book a tour! You wont regret it!
