Nizwa Souq
Exploring the Nizwa Souq is one of the top things to do in Oman. It is one of the oldest markets in the country and you will find fruit, meat, sweets, pottery, souvenirs and antiques... There is a lot to discover as you stroll through in the middle of the locals. Below is my guide to help you plan your visit.
Nizwa Fort Oman
The fort in Nizwa dates from the 17th century, during the Al Ya’rubi dynasty, and was built on top of the ruins of a 9th-century castle. The massive structure has been nicely restored, with many rooms set up to look as they did when the fort was in use; you'll see interesting historic tidbits offered in various displays in many rooms. Be sure to check out the prisoner room and read about the wartime use for the local dates, which were turned into a deadly weapon in the form of a cauldron of boiling date syrup. The views from the central tower are spectacular and worth the climb.

Fantastic Tour with Mak to Nizwa and the mountains

5.00It was such a lovely tour with Muqimi (Mak) to Nizwa and the mountains. We had a leisurely time browsing and shopping at the Nizwa Souq, then a walk down history through Nizwa Fort. Followed by a sumptuous lunch (included) - got to taste camel curry - and then to the mountains. I particularly enjoyed the hike from one village to another - the views were breathtaking-taking and refreshing. The day ended with a climb up an abandoned village to watch the sunset at the peak. The tour was leisurely with Mak and a small group (just 3 of us) and we all got plenty of information sharing and laughter from Mak. He also whisked us around from place to place safely and very comfortably in a 4WD. This is a tour not to be missed!!

5.00I had a really great experience on this tour and would highly recommend it. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and answered many of our questions in great detail, which helped me understand Oman much better beyond just the sights. He was also very enthusiastic, always willing to help take photos, and made sure meal arrangements went smoothly throughout the day. The group size was just right — not too big — which created a comfortable atmosphere and gave us plenty of opportunities to ask questions and interact with the guide. This made the whole experience feel more personal and engaging. Overall, it was a well-organized and enjoyable tour with a guide who genuinely cares about sharing Omani culture and history. Thank you for a wonderful day.

Abdullah accompanied us during almost all the activities, and his kindness, availability, and deep knowledge truly made the experience unforgettable. 5.00We had a beautiful day with our guide Nabeel. Nabeel was very patient and nice. He knew a lot about the culture, nature and history of his country. The places we visited were amazing! I think we all had a perfect day. We were a group of four for a just day from all over the word. I can really recommend this trip!

5.00This was an amazing trip, from the moment our guide Mohammad Ali picked us up at our hotel. We were a total of 4 persons in a late model 4 x 4, and Mohammad spoke perfect English while explaining the history of Oman on the drive to Nizwa. From Nizwa we went to Jebel Akhdar where it was considerably cooler because of the altitude. Bring a puffer jacket in case you feel the cold. After a delicious lunch we headed back to Muscat arriving around dinner time. All in all, this was an amazing trip and many thanks to Mohammad Ali.
