Exploring the Nizwa Souq is one of the top things to do in Oman. It is one of the oldest markets in the country and you will find fruit, meat, sweets, pottery, souvenirs and antiques... There is a lot to discover as you stroll through in the middle of the locals. Below is my guide to help you plan your visit.

Nizwa Fort Oman

The fort in Nizwa dates from the 17th century, during the Al Ya’rubi dynasty, and was built on top of the ruins of a 9th-century castle. The massive structure has been nicely restored, with many rooms set up to look as they did when the fort was in use; you'll see interesting historic tidbits offered in various displays in many rooms. Be sure to check out the prisoner room and read about the wartime use for the local dates, which were turned into a deadly weapon in the form of a cauldron of boiling date syrup. The views from the central tower are spectacular and worth the climb.

We had a lovely day thanks to the couple who we shared this trip with - our guide was very nice but not as informative as I would have liked; Nizwa souq was interesting as was the fort (but we learned a lot more about the fort at the Bait Al-Zubair Museum in Old Muscat!), great views from Jebel Akhdar but not much else.

Mohamann was very informative and patient whilst showing us the beauty of his country. Nizwa was bustling and the fort so interesting but the highlight for me was the natural beauty of the Green Mountains. Thank you

As part of a small group, led through the day by an experienced and fun local guide, this trip was so enjoyable. Would really recommend Gidoman for trips. This was the second of two trips I booked and found the company to be very professional, great communication prior and great guides.

Great journey. Saam was a great guide. Fluently english. Humor. Took us to place that only guides can know. On my request he did a small detour to the museum in Nizwa I wanted to see because of it contemporary architecture. I’m so thankful to have seen it. 🙏🏼 We were 4 ladies from all over the world. Please rate 4, 8 hours car drive in total, tourist Niswa. Is not worth the money and also pay 22 euros for the visit to the fort. I'm totally dissatisfied with lunch. All the coffee and dates we tasted came from commercial establishments. After 1 hour I felt like coffee, I had to pay myself. Advise not to book this excursion 235 euros wasted money, don't do it

Everything well organized and guide quite knowledgeable and helpful. In my opinion, there was only some individual free time in Nizwa for those who want to do something different from the rest of the group.
Fantastic Tour with Mak to Nizwa and the mountains

It was such a lovely tour with Muqimi (Mak) to Nizwa and the mountains. We had a leisurely time browsing and shopping at the Nizwa Souq, then a walk down history through Nizwa Fort. Followed by a sumptuous lunch (included) - got to taste camel curry - and then to the mountains. I particularly enjoyed the hike from one village to another - the views were breathtaking-taking and refreshing. The day ended with a climb up an abandoned village to watch the sunset at the peak. The tour was leisurely with Mak and a small group (just 3 of us) and we all got plenty of information sharing and laughter from Mak. He also whisked us around from place to place safely and very comfortably in a 4WD. This is a tour not to be missed!!
