Ride along the historic Ohakune Old Coach Road (Grade 3 NZ MTB Trail) at your own pace on this 4-hour unguided bike trail. This native bush corridor on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu is an exciting adventure, a journey back in time. Ride past the concrete piers for the bridge which crossed the Haeremaere Stream on the original railway alignment, the steel lattice Taonui Railway Viaduct, and enjoy expansive views across the Waimarino Plains and of the mighty Mt Ruapehu, magnificent Rimu trees and of course the Hapuawhenua Viaduct.
A fantastic day ride for people of all ages and abilities.

Had a great time. We used Kune bikes for E bike hire they were friendly and well informed and set us up on our bikes. We decided to get them to drop us off which paid off as they gave us an informed talk on the history of the area and the conditions of the old coach road and where the hardest parts were and the parts where the best views were. We cruised along and did it in 3 hours and when we returned we were offed an extension on our hirage if we wanted to. The bike trip was awesome and would highly recommend if you are looking for an adventure. Steve & Brenda

Get the E bikes!! Rookie mistake getting a normal bike ha riding on the cobble stones was hard work. The view and they bridge Holly moley! Planned this weekend away with my partner from Auckland and we both loved it. But agreed next time to take an e bike unless you are a good rider and can’t handle the uneven ground!

Great fun! Interesting, easy ride and the viaducts are impressive! Nice countryside. The people at the shop were fun, informative and helpful. Nel F, 62 years from UK.

Spectacular and historic trail, with a ride over a gorge that was jaw-dropping. We had e-bikes with full suspension and 'drop saddles' ... these are an absolute must. Unless you are a serious off-road biker, you will never manage some of the z-bends. It would have been 5/5 except for the soreness caused by 80+% being on broken-pebble track.

Was such a great bike ride. We did it on our electric bikes, the cobblestones are a bit rough but ya get over it. Just be careful as it is a 2 way track and we meet a couple of people on bikes in a downhill corner comming from the other way was a close call but we got there.

Beautiful town, area of NZ. Bike shop crew friendly, helpful, supportive. We’re 75+ yo cyclists who usually do roads, developed trails. This was a mix of several mountain surfaces, most memorable being cobblestones! The bikes provided were in good repair. Definitely recommend full suspension bikes! We were not on e-bikes and there were 3 or 4 steep stretches where we had to walk bikes a couple of hundred meters, but well worth it. Highly recommend this iconic ride!

Great way to see this beautiful corner of the national park. Fitness level medium and some bike experience useful but eminently achievable.. Bike store staff great, super-helpful regarding route, help during trip if needed etc. Standard bikes pretty good. Fantastic scenery, cycling tracks through forest and farmland. Viaducts and valleys are a must see. All very well signed - and great ice cream at the end of the route at Ohakune Station.

We hired bikes from TCB in town. These were good quality and well maintained. We were bused up to the start of the 15 km ride and basically told follow the signs which was very easy to do. Thinking that this might be relatively flat, (it being a road that was replaced by a railway) we set off expecting to be back after an hour or so. And of course we would had it not been for the numerous information boards that we encountered which were very interesting and painted a picture of days gone by. They were also a handy stopping point, as not only is the route undulating it is also on the old cobbles which might be comfortable in a horse and cart but not on a hard tail mountain bike without electrical assistance. The two viaducts were fantastic feats of engineering and a beautiful lunch stop. For £30 this was great value for a 4 hour activity. You will need to be relatively fit or take a long time reading the boards.

Awesome track and scenery. Suitable for all levels of riding and fitness. Definitely upgrade to the e-bikes, much better quality of bike and therefore better suspension which made for a much more enjoyable ride. Super helpful staff.
