Bolafjall Sky Walk and Syðridalur Mine. This tour offers a mix of natural beauty, history and a touch of adventure in a small or private group.
You'll experience Bolafjall sky walk, enjoy the views of steep cliffs and endless North Atlantic Ocean with Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in the far distance. Also, you will have a chance to learn about NATO's monitoring infrastructure located on the mountain. After walking into the sky, we will head for a short hike to explore the old and abandoned lignite mine in Syðridalur. Hiking at a moderate pace to the mines gives us enough time to visit the Ósvör Maritime Museum as well.
Syðridalur in Bolungarvík is known for an old lignite mine which is situated in the valley. It was mined from the mine in the years of 1917 until 1921 or while and after the first World War. To get into the mine you almost have to crawl, but once you're in the ceiling gets higher and you can stand upright. Scenic walk up to the mine takes around 25 min on a marked trail.

Bolafjall
You'll experience Bolafjall sky walk, enjoy the views of steep cliffs and endless North Atlantic Ocean with Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in the far distance. Also, you will have a chance to learn about a key piece of NATO's monitoring infrastructure located on the mountain. After walking into the sky, we will head for a short hike to explore the old and abandoned lignite mine in Syðridalur. This tour is perfect for those who appreciate dramatic landscapes and historical curiosities. At 628m, the Bolafjall platform spectacularly overlooks the Djúpið or Isafjörður deep. The long inlet marks the watery borders of inhabited and unpopulated land the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve without a single road. NATO radar station is also situated at the summit of Bolafjall. The station was built by the Americans but is now controlled by the Icelandic coast guard.

The reason why the mining was shut down is because coal from Europe became more accessible after the war. Weather prevented us doing the tour as advertised - snow had cut off the “peak” part of the tour and the rain made the mine not the best option first thing so our amazing guide suggested an alternative. Our guide thought on her feet and we had an amazing day - a real day to remember. I would recommend this tour company 100% they are very customer focused and go above and beyond to make sure guests have an amazing time.

Absolutely amazing day, the highlight of our cruise “Peak” was shut due to snow closing roads to it so were offered alternatives and had an amazing day with a superb guide. Great communication by text made for a stress free start to day despite ship being delayed docking. Whilst we didn’t follow the planned itinerary due to weather conditions outside the tour operators control the “alternative” was amazing and we had a day that we will remember forever.

Elizabeth took my wife and myself on a hike up to an old mine and then over a pass in the mountains to another valley and the ocean. Learned a lot about the area and living here in Iceland. Much information about her life here and the area.

Our guide, Evelyn, was very friendly and informative throughout the excursion. The hike to the mine was beautiful. It was a moderate hike with beautiful views along the way. Bolafjall was breathtaking. The drive up to the top was exciting with massive views. At the top the observation deck was outstanding and afforded beautiful long range views. The excursion was unique in that we were a small group and could really enjoy ourselves at our own pace.

The hike is fairly strenuous but beautiful and doable for us 70 year olds. The view from the Coast Guard station was absolutely stunning. Our guide was delightful and fun.

This tour is fantastic!! Orla and Justas are the most knowledgeable, sincere people! My family learned all about the Icelandic ways, witnessed the most incredible scenery and will never forget this experience. The caves, waterfalls, and lookout area are a must do!!
