Peterhead Prison Museum
Our 5* Multi-Award winning visitor attraction is set within the former HM Convict Prison, Peterhead. Unique in many ways including being the only "Convict" prison in Scotland [to come here meant you were sentenced to "penal servitude"]; It had the first "state owned" railway in Britain; and it was the only time the Special Air Service were used to end a domestic siege on mainland UK when an officer was held hostage for 4 day's in 1987. All your senses will be teased as you walk the galleries and halls where you are surrounded by the visual, our award winning audio tour will bring you into moments in time as you listen to former officers tell their stories and your olfactory senses will be in overdrive at key locations on the route. Walk in the footsteps of former officers and inmates of "Scotland's Toughest Jail" often referred to as "Scotland's Alcatraz". This is a once in a life time experience and one that will live with you for many year's to come

What a visit, full of history, emotions and learning. We took the family, mixed ages ranging from 3 to 67 years. There was plenty to explore, a load of clues to a mystery prisoner for the “younger detectives” to find. The experience is enhanced by an audio loop, which explains things at various numbers around the site; you are in control so you can tour at your pace. Finishing off at the cafe for some welcomed refreshments. Then back to the main gate, via the Life Boat Museum, to return the audio loops, and purchase some keep sakes. A lot to see and experience, so allow a good couple of hours. Will definitely visit again, as I am sure there is more to take in.

Took our grandchildren for a visit and were there for a couple of hours. Good value as the children were free of charge given it was mid term. It was quite surprising how talented some of the inmates are and gave a positive side to their rehabilitation. We had a coffee in the cafe which was manned by very pleasant staff. Only downside was the fact they didn’t have enough audio machines and we were 4 adults and two 11 year olds, who obviously wanted their own, which meant just 2 between the 4 adults which wasn’t ideal. Having said that, although inconvenient didn’t take too much away from the experience. I hope this attraction can get the funding to stay open as it would be such a loss.

First time in prison !!!! It was really interesting and very informative . All the exhibit's are well done and explanations on how life was in there was very very good . We went with visiting friends and they loved it . Was absolutely freezing inside though so I’d suggest loads of warm clothing !! Only let down was the long wait in the cafe for our cuppa …. an hour ! The cafe was seriously understaffed , caught out with so many visitors I think ! We really enjoyed though and would recommend it

This was such an interesting place to visit. We chose to do the self guided tour which comes with information headphones that you listen to at marked points throughout the venue. I don’t think you can really appreciate what our prison system has been like until you visit a prison steeped in history from infamous inmates to riots involving the SAS. 2 hours flew past. Wrap up warm - it’s a cold location.

The tour exceeded my expectations, and my expectations were high. The prison is an atmospheric building and the guide really knew his stuff. Exhibitions of old photos are very interesting and it’s chilling to realise some were put together by a former prison in solitary confinement. Definitely worth a visit and a repeat visit!

Did the guided tour today with former prison officer David. An amazing insight into life behind bars in Scotland toughest jail. David brought the prison's past to life by sharing his knowledge on this 90 minute guided tour. Highly recommended!
