Pico mountain climb is a very special activity. For the Pico ascent, specific mountaineering techniques are not required to reach the peak. But it is a tough ascent and descent. And that’s why we only advice it for active people. People used to hike in natural terrain, or used to sports in general. Pico mountain is an unique kind of stratovolcano. Most of the lava flows that cover the cone are less of 5000 years old. It’s possible to observe a significant number of very well preserved pahoehoe lavas, and other volcanic features. The mountain flora is also unique in Pico. Calluna vulgaris and Daboecia azorica cover most of the mountain above 1500 meters. And the Silene uniflora cratericola is specific to Pico crater. And only exists there. Weather wise it’s also challenging. Since it can change very quickly. It’s important to be well equipped and prepared for rain, cold, wind and heat. Pico mountain climb is a very demanding activity.

5.00Climbing Mount Pico with Luís as our guide was an outstanding experience. From start to finish, everything was perfectly organized. Luís shared a wealth of knowledge about the island and the volcano, while also instilling in us a profound respect for nature and the importance of preserving it. The hike is demanding, but the reward is truly worth the effort. A must-do experience when visiting Faial or Pico, and without a doubt best enjoyed with Our-Island.

5.00The tour was well organized and prepared. We started from Faial and took the first ferry in the morning to Pico Island, where a taxi was already waiting to bring us to the mountain house. Luis is a very experienced guide, who patiently cared about us and the nature on this long day trip on Pico Mountain. Thank you!

5.00My guide Luis was fantastic. The weather was very questionable but Luis made me feel comfortable that we were not going to take any risks. As we reached major milestones in the climb he reassessed the weather and my fitness before deciding to continue. Without his expertise I don’t think I would have completed the climb

This was a challenging hike but Luis expertly guided us through it all and greatly exceeded our expectations. We had a great time!

5.00Wow! What a trip that was! Thank you so much to Rita (who handled the whole administration stuff and communicated with us before the climb) and to Luis (who was the best guide to introduce us to stunning Pico Mountain)! We found Ourisland Azores thoroughly professional, fun and flexible. And from the moment we met Luis at the ferry terminal in Horta early in the morning until we parted again around 12 hours later we had fun, felt tremendously safe and learned so much about the region, the islands, the mountain, the people and all their challenges. Being avid mountain hikers (mainly in the Alps, though) we felt it was right to hire a guide to climb Pico Mountain. While one can find the way up to the crater rim and to the peak on his/her own, an experienced mountain guide always knows the right paths to follow up AND DOWN, cares about safety (sharp lava rocks, slippery gravel and muddy soil) and knows when to take the occasional break. Luis kept a wonderfully steady pace up and down and let us into so many interesting facts and secrets - absulutely fabulous. He could "sense" the mountain and knew exactly when another five minutes of hiking made the difference between having a break in the clouds and enjoying a sip of tea and some chocolate under the nice September sun ;-) All in all: perfect agency, perfect guide - we will be back for more.
