IMPORTANT NOTICE: The main buildings of Shuri Castle were destroyed by fire in the night of October 31, 2019. The city hopes to rebuild the main building by 2022, the 50th anniversary of Okinawa's reversion to Japan. A city district of Naha today, Shuri is the name of the former capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Shuri Castle (首里城, Shurijō) served as the administrative center and residence of the Ryukyu kings for several centuries until Okinawa became a Japanese prefecture in 1879. The castle is included as one of the UNESCO World Heritage designated Castles of the Ryukyu Kingdom sites. Shuri Castle was originally built in the late 1300s, and played an integral role in the political unification of the island. Wars and fires destroyed the castle multiple times over the centuries, most recently in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. The current buildings are beautiful reconstructions dating from 1992. The approach to the castle's central buildings leads through multiple gates, including the well known Shureimon Gate. The castle's hilltop location allows for nice views over Naha along the way.
Kokusaidori
Naha’s International Street was known post-WW II as the miracle mile for its almost-instantaneous reconstruction. With rows of souvenirs and restaurants, it is a staple sightseeing spot for visitors to Okinawa. Popular spots to visit include the central Makishi Public Market, dining establishments and the Don Quijote, Japan’s largest discount store. If you’re going for a stroll at night, there are izakaya where you can listen to performances of traditional Okinawa folk music and shamisen players.

Hiromi was great. Very knowledgeable and spoke english well. Very organized with lots Pictures and slides to provide more detail and context. While it rained most of the day we were able to miss most of it by rearranging the places to visit. Don't worry about the steps to the underground Naval Headquarters. They are quite easy.

We learned so much and really appreciated seeing Naha from the perspective of a long time local and great grandfather

Hyde guided us during the tour. He waited patiently at the port due to the Customs process of coming off the cruise. He immediately help communicate with the taxi driver which the van fits up to 7 ppl. The downsides is he is very knowledgeable about Naha, unfortunately we had limited about of time being on port, we had to rush. I had a lot of my itinerary that I provided to him days before but not all the ones I requested were hit due to time or closures. I reserved this tour 2 weeks before the actual day and it stayed for me to wait 7 days before the tour of the tour guide to reach out to me. However, I heard no word and had to reach out to Hyde and he didn’t even know I booked this tour! I do not know if the agency didn’t notify him of the tour. I honestly felt like my tour could have gotten to areas that I needed to go as I did my research on how far the sites is from the port which are close. Recommend this tour if you are a history buff and just go to 2 sites. Other than that, book a shuttle service or taxi if you only wanna go shopping at Kokusai Street.

After we exited our cruise ship, Hiromi was waiting wearing a smile and holding our name sign. She escorted us to the car where we met the friendly and skilled driver. Hiromi had excellent communication with us before the trip, and made a minor change in itinerary to accommodate my moderate mobility impairment. Throughout our tour she was informative, helpful, and particularly attentive to my safety and comfort. The itinerary was well suited to the time allotted, and we were able to enjoy four sites including a tasty lunch at a local market. The coordination between the driver and guide was excellent as well. My wife and I agreed that Hiromi was one of the finest guides with whom we’ve ever had the pleasure of touring.

I have emailed a list of the places we wanted to visit but our tour guide didn’t follow our ideas. We wanted to have lunch at Makishi Public Market but he took us to Yomitan instead. We can’t buy the charms at Naminoue Shrine because it was too late the store closed already. We don’t have enough time to shop at Naha Kokusai Shopping street because he took us to a museum that we don’t really care. Very disappointed for such horrible services.
