Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral
Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral, built in the late 1880s by French colonists, is one of the few remaining strongholds of Catholicism in the largely Buddhist Vietnam. Located in Paris Square, the name Notre Dame was given after the installation of the statue ‘Peaceful Notre Dame’ in 1959. In 1962, the Vatican conferred the Cathedral status as a basilica and gave it the official name of Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica. Measuring almost 60 metres in height, the cathedral’s distinctive neo-Romanesque features include the all-red brick façade (which were imported from Marseille), stained glass windows, two bell towers containing six bronze bells that still ring to this day, and a peaceful garden setting in the middle of downtown Ho Chi Minh City District 1.
Central Post Office
The Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh is a beautifully preserved remnant of French colonial times and perhaps the grandest post office in all of Southeast Asia. Located next door to Notre Dame Cathedral, the two cultural sites can be visited together and offers visitors a chance to imagine life in Vietnam during the times of the Indochinese Empire. The building was designed by Alfred Foulhoux and features arched windows and wooden shutters, just as it would have in its heyday in the late 19th Century.

Our tour with Bruno was exceptionally informative and helpful. Navigating the busy city, his expertise provided invaluable insight knowledge into the culture and history of key areas. Saw Postal Office, Museum , Independence Palace and the bustling energy of Bến Thành Market (with tough bargaining) and then experienced the wholesale market of Chinatown, Bruno guided us on every location. He was attentive, answered all our questions with enthusiasm.

Wi was an incredible tour operator. He had so much experience and showed us so much of Vietnam. It was nice to have lunch with Wi. He took us to his favorite resturant then went to his favorite coffee house, where we ate, laughed and I had two of my first a banh mi sandwich and egg coffee. Both were absolutely delish. But the talking and laughing with Wi was even better. Thank you for an excellent tour. My husband and I loved seeing your city through your eyes. That is what makes trips so special.

We booked this tour as a last minute 1 day before and it turned out to be a wonderful decision. Booking was easy and we received immediate confirmation. We were contacted by the tour operator on WhatsApp. Our guide, Y (Nhuy) also sent a WhatsApp message introducing herself and detailing pick up. We disembarked the Celebrity Solstice and took a port shuttle bus the scant 500 meters from the ship to the port exit where Y was waiting with a sign. The SUV was clean and ready for us. The 2 hour journey to Ho Chi Minh City through Vung Tau was slightly marred by rain but the driver was superb, careful, and we made it to start the city tour through the War Remnants Museum, Reclamation Palace, Central Post Office, past the Notre Dame of Saigon cathedral (which is closed for renovations). Y then took us to an authentic Vietnamese lunch at…. a Michelin starred Pho street cafe!! We shopped at the massive City market (bring your best haggling skills, you’ll need them) then returned to port at Phu My, stopping at a beautiful Buddhist monastery 10 minutes from the port. Y is a superb tour guide. She is engaging, personable, checked in with us constantly to make sure we were comfortable, and has a strong grasp of English. She is an admirable young woman, and we would take another tour with her any day. In short, book this private tour- you won’t regret it and the customizable itinerary cannot be beat!

Barney is a great tour guide and he made the one day tour to Saigon very enjoyable. He gave an overview of the Vietnamese culture and cuisine on the way into the city and introduced the itinerary for the day and made modifications per our preference. He led us on a pleasant journey through the city, covering both the new and old sections, and treated us to a highly rated pho restaurant. I strongly recommend this tour and Barney to all tourists coming to Saigon.
