Known as "the Underground City", Matera is famous for being one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. On October 17, 2014, Matera was declared the European Capital of Culture for 2019.

5.00My wife and I were visiting Matera for the first time. We decided to book a private tour on day 1 to get familiar with the area. Turned out to be the best idea! We had an amazing tour with Grace who explained all the history and also took us to some of her favorite spots for views, food and more. We would have never found them on our own. Highly recommend!

5.00George was an expert guide. He made us feel very welcome with his individual greetings and he set the historical context for the area prior to our very detailed exploration of Mattera. I can’t imagine exploring the area without a guide as there are just so many winding pathways and secret spots. We learnt so much not just about Mattera but also Italian culture of the region. I would highly recommend this tour. Thank you George!

5.00Matera is a beautiful place to visit, we did so in June 2025 with a family of five. Giorgio was a great guide and showed us not just the touristy parts but also some nice hidden gems. Highly recommended!

5.00Our tour guide Giorgio was excellent. The tour was very interesting, our guide had a lot of knowledge. He was very personable, knowledgeable and tailored it to what we were interested in. 5.00Excellent and informative tour with Giorgio, felt like strolling with a friend through Matera. My daughter loved the Instagrammable locations on the tour. He gave us great tips where to eat and drink in Matera, as well as other places to visit on the Salento peninsula. We loved his tour so much we arranged another with Giorgio through Lecce. Highly recommended!!

5.00Giorgio was a wonderful guide of Matera! It was very easy to book with him, and he gave clear instructions of where to meet. As we walked through the ancient city, he shared very interesting facts and stories about the city’s history. He also shared information about Italian culture in general to help tell the story of Matera in past and present, and how modern Italy is connected so deeply to its history.
