Really enjoyed the walking food tour with Hungry Whales. Our guides were friendly and super knowledgeable about Azorean cuisine and the history of food there. The tour hits a lot of great spots, would definitely recommend doing at the start of your stay to get the lay of the land and so you have a heads up on the best spots to eat!

Nadja, co-owner of Hungry Whale, does a terrific job conducting this food tour. Don’t eat breakfast…it’s a lot of food. Your first stop is a bakery with local tea, a raw milk cheddar slice sandwiched in a local bread and a little local tart with pineapple, cinnamon and orange. Nadja gives a great history of the Azores, explaining how it was settled with a little political commentary thrown in. On to the farmers market to taste the locally grown pineapple, unbelievably sweet. We also tasted a couple of local cheeses, one spreadable and the other hard. Next stop is a local taverna, where we tried a few local sausages and local fresh cheese with great bread, washed down by your choice of beverage. On to another cafe for fried mackerel with a special sauce and small potatoes. Getting full? You must keep a little room for the dessert, a chocolate cookie filled with pineapple ice cream and lots of fresh berries and currents, topped with caramel. A great way to start a stay in Ponte Delgado!

The guide was great, but I didn’t think this was worth the $. It was a full hour before we ate - half a bread roll with some cheese and half a cup of tea. We then had a scraping of cheese at the end of a butter knife. The meal at A Tasca was portioned very small - two entrees and two bread w cheese appetizers for 9 people. The final food was a “meal” back at their headquarters. Everyone was polite, but I would opt to take myself for a nice meal instead.
