Sanmachi Suji
Sanmachi Street is a popular sightseeing area in Hida-Takayama. As an old town, the area has houses and stores from the Edo period (1603 - 1868). The area is lined with shops carrying local specialties such as Japanese sake, senbei (rice crackers), barbecue yakiniku Hida beef, and croquettes. The area has a lively atmosphere with people shopping and eating. Sanmachi Street is a five-minute walk from JR Takayama Station. Be sure to stop by when you visit Takayama.
Takayama Jinya
Because of its valuable timber resources, the Hida Region around Takayama was put under direct control of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1692. The Takayama Jinya (高山陣屋) served as the local government office headed by the officials dispatched from Edo (present day Tokyo). The building complex was in official use until 1969, and is now open to the public as a museum. It includes various nicely maintained tatami mat rooms that once served as offices, conference rooms, guest rooms and residential space. There is also an interesting interrogation room. Beside the main building stands a large storehouse built in the 1600s. Known as the biggest traditional rice storehouse in Japan, it now functions as a museum, showcasing belongings and official documents of past feudal lords, old maps of the Hida Region and historic town plans. JGA Yoko was a wonderful guide and Takayama is truly a hidden gem of Japan. I fell in love with this place thru seeing the blend of ancient Japan with the modern world today. JGA Yoko was so beautifully articulate as she informed us about the history of the samurai, the incredible parade floats that move thru the city twice a year at the turn of the season, and gorgeous shrines to boot. Not to mention the shops of old town as well. It was a perfect afternoon getting to know the corners of Takayama I’m sure not everyone who visits gets to see. Can’t recommend this tour enough!

This was one of the best tours that we have had in our first 2 weeks in Japan. Yuko was well organized very thorough in all her explanations of Takayama. She also gave us dinner & tea ceremony recommendations. We were able to combine a little shopping along the way. Takayama is not to be missed.

I had a fantastic time on the Takayama Half‑Day Private Tour. Our guide Akane was fabulous— warm, knowledgeable, and spoke excellent English—making the experience feel personal and tailored to both my friend and myself. We sampled delicious local food and drinks, including sake, and visited beautiful shrines, temples, and key sights around Takayama, making it a truly memorable tour.

Our tour guide, Micasa-san, had an excellent grasp of Japanese history and culture. He also inquired of our expectations and interests prior to our arrival to enable him to formulate our tour itinerary. He even suggested areas for us to tour on our own prior to our tour. Would recommend Micasa-san for his experience, personality and ability to put together a tour that aligns with the travelers’ expectations.
