The fascinating old centre of Gjirokaster is on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Largely medieval, with some lovely architecture to admire, reflecting the town’s wealthy past, it is built on a hill overlooking a valley and mountains. This interesting museum will give a good impression of the way of living in Albania during the Ottoman period.
On our way back to Saranda, we will pass from the national park Syri I Kalter. In this peaceful forest, we will walk (15 min) to the crystal clear spring called Blue Eye, where 900 m3 water per minute is coming from deep down the earth. If time permits, there will be a short coffee break at the restaurant next to the fast streaming river in the park, before heading back to the port of Saranda.

Gjirokaster
First stop is in Gjirokaster (Old Town) Defined by its castle, roads paved with chunky limestone and shale, imposing slate-roofed houses and views out to the Drina Valley, Gjirokastra is a magical hillside town described beautifully by Albania's most famous author, Ismail Kadare (b 1936), in Chronicle in Stone. There has been a settlement here for 2500 years, though these days it's the 600 'monumental' Ottoman-era houses in town that attract visitors. For Albanians, the town is also synonymous with former dictator Enver Hoxha, who was born here and ensured the town was relatively well preserved under his rule, though he is not memorialised in any way here today.
The Blue Eye
Second Stop: Blue Eye. Albania’s famous Blue Eye (Syri i kaltër) is a water spring and natural phenomenon that each visitor should witness. A popular tourist attraction, the beautiful light turquoise river stuns with its beauty. Located near Muzinë in Albania’s Vlorë County, you’ll want to rent a car to get to the famous Blue Eye. After following the signs and crossing the bridge (where you’ll pay a small fee), you’ll come across a parking spot and a footpath that leads to the Blue Eye. You’ll first be enchanted by the surrounding dense forest and the beautiful light blue river that flows through this natural paradise. The Blue Eye is located beneath a small metal balcony that was built so you can get a closer look. Even though swimming has been prohibited via signs, it doesn’t really prevent people from jumping right into the ice-cold water.

5.00We had a wonderful day with our group and most lovely guide Jona, not to forget our safe driver! Not speeding at all. Jona got us through the sights with warmth and enthusiasm. She also gave us lot of information about the area, its history and the sights. This is really something to try if you appreciate a stress free tour with really good guide. We were picked up from our hotel and welcomed with big smile from Jona. After all of the sight they dropped us back to our hotel. I would recommend the tour with whole heart! Special thanks to Jona!

5.00We had an amazing time with Leka Tours, and our guide and host Kevin. We learned that Leka is owned and operated by Kevin’s family, and I can honestly say we had a fantastic experience. They took us to the Blue Eye, nestled among the most beautiful mountain range. It’s an easy 1 km walk from the car park to the source of the purest water, bubbling out of a 50-meter-deep cave. The water is the clearest I have ever seen in my life, it was truly spectacular. On our drive to the Blue Eye, we noticed hundreds of beehives and asked Kevin if the honey was for sale. After our visit, Kevin made a call with the farmer and arranged for us to pick up what I can only describe as the purest, sweetest honey we have ever seen and tasted. Naturally, we bought a litre to take home. I would highly recommend this purchase if you like honey. Next, we were taken to the castle overlooking Saranda to watch the sunset. Kevin forbids there in good time to get a seat and settle in. The views up there are truly breathtaking, and the memory of our time will stay with us forever. Leka Tours is an amazing service run by amazing people. If you're looking for a tour operator you can trust, give them a try, you won’t be disappointed. 5+ stars from us!

3.00Very little time to explore Jgirokaster due to very poor use of bus time. Blue eye was gorgeous with just enough time spent there.

The trip through Gjirokastër, the visit to Syri i Kaltër, and the stop at Lëkurësi Castle were all beautifully organized and truly memorable. Even though the group was large, everything was simply fantastic! A really positive atmosphere was created, full of great energy and excellent cooperation among everyone. It felt like one big united group enjoying a perfect day together. The whole day had a fantastic energy from start to finish, running smoothly and without any issues. A special thank you to our guide Jona for her professionalism, kindness, and great communication, as well as to the driver, who made the journey safe, comfortable, and relaxed throughout. 5.00This was such a wonderful experience with the best guide we could have wished for. Jona is absolutely amazing at her job, always made sure we were having a good time, shared experiences with us and told us all about the history and tales of the places we were visiting. A tour that was supposed to last 5-6 hours turned into an 8 hour tour because all of us were enjoying it so much. I have never done a tour like this before and Jona set my bar of expectations high for the next one.
