Udawalawe National Park
Udawalawe National Park lies on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces, in Sri Lanka. The national park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River, as well as to protect the catchment of the reservoir. The reserve covers 30,821 hectares (119.00 sq mi) of land area and was established on 30 June 1972. Before the designation of the national park, the area was used for shifting cultivation (chena farming). The farmers were gradually removed once the national park was declared. The park is 165 kilometers (103 mi) from Colombo. Udawalawe is an important habitat for water birds and Sri Lankan elephants. It is a popular tourist destination and the third most visited park in the country. During a visit, it is not unusual to see whole herds of adults and young elephants – feeding or bathing and playing in the water! In addition to this main attraction, the park is home to many Water Buffalo, Water Monitor, Lizards, Sambar Deer, Monkeys, and the occasional Leopard, as well as being an exciting location for bird enthusiasts.

Be patient! A safari takes time & although we had to wait to get the experience, we were astounded by what we saw. The drivers were fantastic & ensured we maximised our day. They communicated amongst their colleagues to ensure we got to see all of the animals we could. We couldn’t have asked for a better day.

Price: In my opinion this tour massively overpriced. In that area you can get it a lot cheaper from any hotel. Just book your living and apply to the hotel to arrange it for you. For example, our friends for 180 usd had at a beautiful camp experience, which included a night stay, breakfast and dinner and a safari trip too. Ethics: I didn't like how the drivers of the jeeps surrounded am elephant family and blocked them the road for 40 minutes waiting for tourists to take photos. It's not better than the zoo with such an approach Timing: started super early but in fact elephants usually appear at 9-10 so for 3 hours you are just waiting in the jeep, looking at peacocks (it's fun the first hour though) Yes we saw some antilopes, crocodile, monkeys, that was nice, but again, for elephants it's better to start the tour later probably Efficiency: why not to sell tickets for a better price but in a shared jeeps? I mean, we dont need a jeep just to ourselves, it's a waste IMHO. So there are loads of jeeps filled with 1 /2 people only. Probably it's better to group tourists and share the price for the jeep

Great to see the elephants up close! Our driver was very responsive when we wanted to see more or move in to the next point. Communication leading up to the visit was great from the operator
