The Māori Village and Whaka trails were great. We learned about the history and life at the village. Angela our guide was wonderful! The Whaka trails had many thermal springs which was great to see. One of the best trips we did.

The indigenous folks live there. You can see a few houses and about 50+ make it their home. The local guides are also mostly indigenous and are passionate. The guided tour was educational, the cultural performance delightful. The self guided walk was relaxing, and many vantage viewpoints to see the local landscape and hot springs, mud ponds etc.

Really interesting relaxed and informative tour and a must do if you are coming to NZ - incredible that these Māori live surrounded by steam vents and bubbling ponds/lakes. Absolutely fascinating! Make sure you do the trail as well! 👍🏻

We enjoyed learning about the Māori culture, and exploring a living village. Our guide Daniel was the best, and his love of his heritage and culture was evident the entire tour. Highly recommend!

We booked the all-day pass which included the guided tour of the village, the Maori cultural show and the self-guided geothermal landscape tour. In addition, we had lunch at the Geyser cafe. All three activities were excellent. Our guide to the village gave an interesting and light-hearted overview of life in this living Maori village, including cooking and bathing and the challenges of living in an unpredictable natural landscape. “Mother nature will do as she pleases” and the community adapts. Likewise the Maori cultural show was both entertaining & educational and featured some exquisite singing from the performers. Finally the self-guided geothermal landscape tour provided a range of different geothermal features including bubbling mud pools, boiling water vents and steamy lakes of various hues. We chose this Maori heritage experience in particular because the Geyser cafe catered well to vegetarians but it was an excellent choice regardless.

My teen and tween loved the Village tour and the guide's stories. The food tasting was amazing and learning about village life was great. Excellent customer service as well.

I’m so glad I made time to do this and I highly recommend anyone going to give yourself a couple hours, buy the all day pass, and time it so you are there for their daily cultural performance at 12:30. It was worth every penny. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly and the performance and tour exceeded my expectations. Our guide, Daniel, was very patient and thoughtful. He made an effort to learn everyone’s name and took the time to genuinely try to teach us about the history, the culture, and the language. Huge thanks to everyone involved!

The experience was unfortunately disappointing due to the attitude and atmosphere that the guide called DANIEL conveyed from the beginning of the tour and continued to do so throughout the tour. We were a group of 8 British Ladies of mature age. Daniel continued to voice his own opinions and prejudices against the British EMPIRE throughout the tour. He took every step to make a comment about how it wasn’t New Zealand’s wars as we entered the village. He continued his criticisms throughout the tour and by the end of the tour our group felt that World Wars 1 & 2 were caused entirely by us. That the Māori culture and history and language was entirely suppressed by the British. He gave his attention completely to a young boy who was a New Zealand Māori child. He is NOT good guide for a BRITISH group. We felt very offended. He appears to be carrying a BIG chip on his shoulder.
