Our Wildlife & Penguin tour offers the most exclusive opportunity in New Zealand to view the endangered, yellow-eyed penguins (hoiho), in their natural habitat. This 90-minute guided tour consists of three parts. Our guests begin their experience in a theatre setting, where they learn about the yellow-eyed penguin and our conservation efforts to protect them. Guests then move into our rehabilitation centre (when penguins are present) where yellow-eyed penguins and other penguin species can be seen up close. Finally, guests take a short bus trip into our reserve where they are guided on an approximately 2km (1.25 mile) nature walk with the potential to see numerous plants and animals, including yellow-eyed penguins and little penguins, fur seals, sea lions, and several species of shore and land birds, all of which reside in the reserve.

Great knowledgeable guides and a great site. It’s only by going on these tours that you can learn and better understand the local wildlife and have a chance of seeing the penguins.

The reserve and wildlife were absolutely stunning, saw little blue penguins nesting, fur seals riding waves and lots of other birds. Lily was very informative during the intro and on the drive. Danny answered all our questions and pointed out different plants and wildlife to our group. All around great experience.

Had a great tour today. Lovely weather and not a difficult walk. Connor, our guide gave lots of information. Unfortunately, we didn't see any yellow eyed penguins but there were a few little blue penguins in their nesting boxes. I would definitely recommend.

Firstly, we were fitted in at short notice for which we are so grateful. The tour was brilliant, informative and indepth. The variety of experiences, from the introduction , the rehabilitation of the penguins area, the short drive, the bush to sea walk were all fascinating and gave us an insight into all of OPERA'S wonderful efforts to support this incredible, yet fragile area . Connor, our guide was so passionate, knowledgeable and really good fun.

Enthusiastic group of people, beautiful tour of the reserve and seals, sea lions and indeed a yellow-eyed penguin! Very special and you contribute to the preservation of the reserve as it is a private enterprise! Do (of course there is no guarantee that you will see wildlife)

This is such a special place and we enjoyed the whole experience. Our tour started with a boat ride on the Sootychaser from the Port Chalmers cruise ship terminal, across the Otago Harbour, to the jetty near Portobello. Captain Rachel gave us lots of interesting information about the area during our scenic trip across the water and then Angus picked us up and took us to The OPERA. We saw a juvenile hoiho penguin in the rehabilitation centre and, during our walk out on the peninsular, we were fortunate enough to be able to view little blue penguins in their nesting boxes, sea lions basking on the beach and fur seals lumbering out of the ocean and snoozing on the cliff tops. The scenery was stunning, and it was so uplifting to see areas in which the wildlife takes precedence and so much work is being done to restore the land to a native sanctuary. We were very pleased to have had the opportunity to visit such an inspiring place and hopefully the fee we paid for the tour will help The OPERA continue its valuable contribution to this area and its beautiful wildlife. If we ever get back to that part of New Zealand we would definitely go again, perhaps giving the twilight tour a try as well.

My husband and I really enjoyed our tour here. Their dedication to conservation is amazing! We did a two-part tour, starting with a boat ride with Monarch Wildlife Cruises and Tours. Everyone at Monarch was wonderful! They did a great job of pointing out wildlife, sharing information, and making the boat ride super enjoyable :) We then made the very short drive to The OPERA property for a tour there. The property is beautiful, and we were lucky enough to see seals and a yellow-eyed penguin during our tour. Lily and Jordan were our guides, and both were knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about their jobs.
