The mokoro or makoro - (mekoro, plural), is a traditional canoe-like vessel commonly used in the Okavango Delta as a popular mode of transport, and now utilized for game viewing safaris.

The makoro has become the iconic symbol of the Delta and is a popular way for visitors to explore the Okavango while on safari.

Originally, the only form of transport for fishing or transporting people and goods around the channels, these canoe-like vessels, approximately 20 feet or 6 meters in length, used to be crafted from tree trunks, which were painstakingly hollowed out using hand tools.

Pick up at 08:00 am in the morning from hotel in Maun, transfer by motor boat during high water season or 4X4 transfer during low water season to Mokoro Station where you will be met by a Professional Guide and a Polar, a short briefing about your trip will be conducted before boarding your Mokoro and travel along the channels of the Okavango Delta to camp on one of the many Islands of the Delta, before reaching you the island, you would have spent some hours seeing the beauty and vastness of the Delta. Upon arrival at a certain island your guide will lead for a game walk in the delta, after game walk you have your lunch after lunch you board on your mokoro to continue your mokoro excursion towards mokoro station where you finish the day trip then back to Maun.

It already started at pick up, in the mail I had received shipungo was a pick up time of 7:00. In our campsite breakfast normally starts at 7:00 and have been able to arrange for us to have breakfast at 6:30. Quickly ate and drank coffee and at 6:55 we were at the reception. At 7:15 the reception but once asked to contact....."the driver is there at 8:00" was the answer... After the drive to the mokoro station with our friendly driver we met Newman, our mokoro "poler". We had a relaxed mokoro trip and arrived on the island. Newman took us there for a "bushwalk." We didn't encounter any other wildlife, except for a few zebras and wildebeest. Of course Newman couldn't help it, that's a matter of luck but he told very little/almost nothing about the environment or the animals that live there. He was just walking ahead of us. The 1.5 hour bushwalk had become a very boring experience. The retreat with the mokoro was again very relaxing. Probably if we had seen a bit more animals it would have been a bit more interesting but our guide didn't know how to make much of it under these circumstances.

Great day! Mokoro guide was knowledgeable, and had great humour. Also took me on a longer walk, and closer to the animals, than the others I saw in the area

Beautiful one day trip through the Okavanga Delta on a Mokoro! My guide picked me up promptly from my hotel and gave me incredible stories and history of the Maun area as we drove to the Delta. Once there, my Mokoro driver provided a wonderfully relaxing ride through the Delta. We even did an animal spotting walk and he was super knowledgeable. My provided lunch was also delicious! Definitely book this your, you won’t regret a single second

I had a nice day at the Okavangodelta! They pick you up in the morning. Then it’s around a 1,5 hours drive which I really enjoyed you see already a lot of the nature there. Then we went with the Mokoro which is super beautiful and we had super sweet guides (Mark, Kenny, Cecilia, Brat - not sure if I wrote the names correct ;)) After that we stopped and did around a three hours walking safari where we spotted giraffes and hippos and some other small animals (bokis, eagle,….) Had some lunch and then went back with the mokoro! I would definitely recommend this tour and Shipungo Safari and Tours! See you again hopefully Mark 🤗🙏 Sandra

Myself and two other girls took a one day canoe tour through the Okavango Delta. It was so beautiful! They came and got us from the hostel, took us on the boat ride to the park, where we got a local tour guide of the delta. We saw many animals and our guides were very very knowledgeable of the Delta. It was such a great day. 100% must do if you are in Maun!
