Under the dome of the northern wing of Sofia University is situated a museum that throws light into the darkness of the distant geological ages.
The Museum houses in its collection and exposition more than 200,000 fossil specimens, rock samples, and geological maps of Bulgaria and the neighboring territories.
The central place, directly opposite the entrance, is assigned to the pride of paleontologists - the restored skeleton of the genus Deinotherium (Deinotherium thraciensis Nikolov). The imposing skeleton (7 m long and 4.20 m high), is built of authentically preserved bones (more than 90%).

The Museum of Paleontology and Historical Geology has existed since 1965 and is housed in the building of the Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". It is located in the under-domed space of the north wing of the University. It began with the formation of the departmental study group in paleontology by Prof. G. Zlatarski. In the museum hall, two different exhibitions are arranged - on paleontology and historical geology. They are arranged by chrono-evolutionary and thematic principles. The paleontological collection showcases the main fossil invertebrates and partly plant organisms from the Paleozoic to the Quaternary. In the exhibition on historical geology, rock samples and fossils, as well as geological maps, are arranged. The central place, directly opposite the entrance, is devoted to the pride of paleontologists - the restored skeleton of the Deinotherium genus. The impressive skeleton (7 meters long and 4.20 meters high) is a marvel to behold.

The Deinotherium in the picture counts, but the audioguide is very scarce, lasts 2 minutes and explains nothing about the equally scarce museum that is nothing more than a collection of fossils without explanatory panels, without phylogenetic links, with dusty cases and bones abandoned on the ground, some without even a tag. If they entrusted the guide and management of the museum to passionate amateurs would make it a gem P.S. We had to pay the entrance and it was not at all clear that we had to do it, however the caretaker did not issue us an entrance ticket

The audio guide is 3 parts of about 5 min at most each, it is interesting because it puts you a little in context but do not expect it to be very deep, what counts is only very superficial.
