At the first stop we'll try the Sicilian Caponata: This is a mixture of fried vegetables (mostly aubergines), seasoned with tomato sauce, celery, onion, olives, capers, sugar and vinegar. There are numerous variations of it, as it is widespread throughout the Mediterranean Sea. Caponata is generally used today as a side dish or hors d'oeuvre, but since the 18th century it has been a main course.

A Wonderful Introduction to Catania Through Food and History

5.00Our tour guide was Anja. As it was December and low season, it was a very intimate tour with just three of us. Anja was very knowledgeable, and whenever she didn’t know an answer, she found it for us immediately. She shared so much about the surrounding areas that we truly regretted not staying in Catania longer than two days to properly explore the places she pointed out. It felt like a lovely history lesson as well. The portions were generous, and you definitely won’t be hungry after the tour. I also really appreciated that Anja sat with us, which made it easy to chat and ask questions. My husband and teenage son thoroughly enjoyed the tour, and after this experience, we are definitely planning to return to Catania and stay longer. I highly recommend this tour!

5.00Allegra was our guide in the evening of Dec 21st. It was raining like hell but she managed to make the food tour extraordinary, cozy and fun. The tour had several high quality stops with amazing food options from Catania. Allegra made a special stop at a church to introduce us to Catanian Christmas traditions and gave us room for digestion. No cheap or just filling carb loaded snacks were provided like we experienced on other tours from a different operator. We had such a good vibe that it felt like being out with friends. The tour with Do Eat Better and Allegra is 100% recommended for people interested in food and the respective story. Must have in Catania!

5.00This was our favorite tour of our time in Italy! Our guide Allegra was amazing and the combination of history and food made for a great way to see Catania given we only had a 2 days in the city. The price was a good value for the food and tour!

5.00My dad and I were staying about an hour north of Catania and planned a day in the city, so we decided to book the Catania Sicilian Street Food Tour: Small Group by Do Eat Better—and we are SO glad we did. We truly could not have imagined a better way to spend our day in Catania. It ended up being just the two of us on the tour with our guide, Kate, which made the experience incredibly personal and intimate. Not only did we eat our way through Catania’s incredible street food, but we also learned so much about the city itself—its architecture, landmarks, and fascinating history. We especially loved that Kate shared nearly as much information about the history of Catania as she did about the history of the food we were tasting. Some of our favorite stops included a cannolo with a magically creamy ricotta filling, a delicious cipollina, fried seafood that was easily the freshest we’ve ever tasted, and an arancino where we even got to choose our preferred filling. Kate also made sure we were well hydrated throughout the tour, providing water along the way as well as beer or wine and a traditional, refreshing Sicilian drink. Had we explored on our own, there is no way we would have learned or appreciated the flavors and sights of Catania to the same extent. Kate was an outstanding guide—clearly passionate, knowledgeable, and genuinely excited to give us the best possible experience. She went above and beyond by offering helpful tips on parking in the city and sharing fantastic hidden-gem restaurant recommendations, both in Catania and near where we were staying in Taormina. My dad and I left the tour feeling 100% satisfied and pleasantly full. As someone who usually enjoys planning my own DIY food tours, take it from me: leave this one to Kate and the Do Eat Better team. You will have an unforgettable experience.
