• Exceptional Tour with Tom — Insightful, Personal, Unforgettable

  We absolutely loved our tour with Tom. He was wonderful — genuinely passionate about the material and it showed in every part of the conversation. In typical British fashion, he was unfailingly polite, empathetic, and attentive, creating a calm and engaging rhythm even in what is otherwise a very busy, high-traffic site. Tom managed to make the experience feel personal and even a bit VIP. He was thoughtful about positioning us behind or ahead of large groups, minimizing the tourist-crowd impact while giving us access to areas and details that felt “behind the scenes.” We never felt rushed — there was ample free time to explore independently — and the four hours with him passed incredibly quickly. His depth of knowledge about the region was impressive and refreshingly balanced. The focus wasn’t an over-sensationalized “Hitler tour,” but rather an insightful look at Berchtesgaden’s evolution — from Hitler’s first visits and the early years of the Reich to the site’s transformation after the war. Tom’s grasp of the local people, workers, and lasting regional impact brought nuance and humanity to what could easily be a one-dimensional story. He encouraged our questions, welcomed our observations, and adjusted seamlessly to our interests. The visit to the Berghof was far more powerful than expected — standing where major decisions were once made, with Tom showing us period imagery of those exact spots, truly brought the history to life. Overall, it was an exceptional, deeply memorable experience that felt both educational and personal. We couldn’t recommend Tom and Discover Eagle’s Nest more highly.

  Fantastic day Tom is extremely knowledge on the history of Berchtesgaden and is a wonderful tour guide. He compliments everything with photos on his iPad so you can really see the differences & similarities of what the areas used to look like vs what you see present day. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip and would absolutely recommend to anyone interested in leaning more about the local area. Thank you Tom!

  It was our good fortune that it snowed the early morning prior to our tour. Eagle’s Nest was closed due to impassability. Now what do we do with our reserved (months in advance) Discover Eagle’s Nest tour? With flexibility and a positive attitude, we consulted with our Certified Historical Tour Guide, Tom. With my spouse’s concurrence, we somewhat grudgingly agreed to proceed with our private tour and Tom and “braved” the chilly and steady rain (we travel prepared for weather not sunny skies and 20 inclusive). We are so happy that we really listened to Tom and overcame our smallness of mind. As we came to understand through Terrific Tom, Eagle’s Nest was a show tea house where Hitler visited only 14 times. The real story where Hitler lived and spent 1/3 of his time was at his Berghof at a lower (and passable) altitude. Tom is brilliant(!), young and energetic. He has immersed himself in local history. The ruins. The bunkers. The back stories. We relived history through Tom’s encyclopedic knowledge. With our enthusiasm, you can detect that we can go on and on about our experience. And, yes, we remained committed to pay for the full tour. Tom proved well worth it. Without any reservation, highly recommend Discover Eagle’s Nest. PS: Tom stated if “Eagle’s Nest” not in the name of his business, his clientele would markedly decline. Glad it is in the name. However, additionally glad we did not discover Eagle’s Nest; rather our time and attention were far more wisely directed elsewhere. Thank you, Tom.

  We had an outstanding experience on our tour of the Eagle’s Nest in Obersalzberg with Tom from Discover Eagle's Nest Tours as our guide. From start to finish, Tom was incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and personable. He brought the history of the area to life with fascinating detail—combining historical facts, local stories, and just the right touch of humor to keep everyone interested. Tom’s passion for the subject was clear, and he did a great job balancing the complex history of the region with thoughtful context. The pacing was perfect, giving us plenty of time to take in the breathtaking mountain scenery, explore the site, and ask questions. The logistics were smooth and well-organized—comfortable transportation, clear instructions, and plenty of time at key stops. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or just looking for an unforgettable experience in the Bavarian Alps, I highly recommend booking this tour with Tom. It’s one of the highlights of our trip to Germany!

  This was an incredible tour! Amy Lewis, our tour guide, was not only an expert on the Obersalzberg and it's history, but was an amazing presenter and immersed us in it's unusual history. 5-stars!

  Guide was great. Very knowledgeable. On time, and professional. My only concern was the nature of the travel and the size of the area truncates the ability to visit the Documentation Museum and the Eagles Nest itself. This should be a longer time frame, or if I could give some advice, make the pick up and drop off point the Documentation Museum, so that after you visit the Eagles Nest, you can take your time after the guide leaves at the documentation center.

  We had done this tour before, a few years ago, and were so impressed with our guide Tom Lewis that when we had a visitor from Australia recently, this was one of the things we definitely wanted to do again. We were a group of about 10 persons, family and friends, of different ages and backgrounds, and it was once again phantastic! Tom's in-depth knowledge of history and the area had impressed us already the first time, and again we learnt so much about the area and the history. Tom's passion for the subject and the region is contagious! He is able to talk about this dark part of our Austrian / German history of the second world war and impart detailed information without in any way glorifying it, but simply allowing one to understand the situation and the consequences of choices made by people back then better. It increases the understanding of our past, which is always helpful to watch out so that it should never repeat itself.

  Sharon was phenomenal. Her knowledge and expertise was so impressive and in depth we were often left saying, "Wow, I never knew/heard that before". She took us all over the beautiful landscape where horrible atrocities were planned and did an excellent job showing us where a great deal of historical sites would have been. She had would take us through the tree's and landscape with her tablet and show pictures of what was where compared to where we were. It really helped to put everything in perspective. The bunker was awesome and Eagles Nest was simply a marvel. Also, I got to flip a light switch that was the original (while silly to some, I was giddy) DO THIS TOUR!!!!

  Tom is a fantastic tour guide who shared his extensive knowledge and great resources to paint a clear and vivid picture of all sites visited. Transportation between sites was safe and comfortable. Highly recommend! Thank you Tom for an unforgettable experience!
