Review of two excursions with NEXT CONTINENT wildlife guides, August 2025. I am an international specialist in forest ecology with a lifetime of interest in birds. With my wife I have done guided birding trips in Scotland and Africa. It was wonderful to find ‘Next Continent’ in Hoi An. They were keen to answer my questions and show us as many birds as possible on two excursions. The field guides, Hoang and Thanh on the Thu Bon River and Tien Nguyen at Bach Ma, were knowledgeable, enthusiastic and passionate about their country and its natural history. The early morning trip into the quieter reaches of the Thu Bon would have been worthwhile even without some good bird sightings, with several kingfisher species and the Tibetan sand-plover being highlights for me. The Bach Ma trip combined some brief but memorable bird sightings (ashy wood-swallow, silver pheasant, Hodgson’s hornbill, blue whistling-thrush and green-billed makoha) with graphic insights into French colonialism. Tien was enthusiastic and persistent in her search for new species and made the days very enjoyable although in the end our total bird list for Bach Ma, the lower rice paddies and the Da Nang peninsula was a relatively low 47 species. Traditional Vietnamese food was all high quality and abundant. The driver (both trips) was part of the teamwork, getting us to and from the birding stops with efficiency and safety. Overall, we both enjoyed the trips which were good value and organized professionally with the interests and abilities of the clients given top priority. Five stars!
