The khukuri is the symbol of loyalty and Gurkha warrior, regarded as traditional to all hill tribes of Nepal, also a multipurpose knife can be used for shaping timber to chopping up meat and vegetables. The blade is of tempered steel, slightly curved and exceedingly sharp. The handle is usually of wood or buffalo horn. A nick in the blade close to the handle serves the purpose of preventing blood from reaching the handle and is also symbolic of the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The blade is enclosed in a scabbard of wood and leather.
The Khukuri comes in different sizes but for this workshop you will be making a small(6 inch) blade. Take part in creating your own knife. The process implies cutting/hammering a raw piece of iron into the shape of the blade, grinding the blade and making the handle. (note that for safety reasons, the blade grinding will only be done by the host and we advise guests to stay clear of the sparks during this process). Take a Knife as a souviner.

Please note that Khukuri making needs a lot of skill and years of experience! To make sure the experience stays safe, there are parts of the process that our host will do for you. The steps in which you will be participating are: 1. Hammering the iron. 2. The first grinding. 3. Buffing and polishing the knife at last. .

A person met me outside my Airbnb & we took a taxi they arranged to the kukuri making location that was a small, rustic and authentic workshop. The knife making master & his family/assistants were all friendly, accommodating & easy to work with. I went away with an attractive, useful kukuri. It was a fascinating experience.

I hade a great experience making my own knife. I massaged them in the morning and was able to make it in the afternoon. The knife came out razor sharp and I already used it for cooking and carving wood. Thanks for this unforgettable expierence.

This is a special experience. You will be involved in the process including hammering and grinding. Don’t worry if you’re not sure about handling things because Indra and Prakash will take care of everything. Namrata the tour guide is a real treat. She accompanied me through out the 6 hour tour. She provided a meal break of puffed rice and grilled buffalo meat. You can opt for other food items as well. I can’t say enough about her wonderful personality. I would suggest people with walking issues consider there are steep steps leading to the shop. Also, I wouldn’t recommend for small children.

Had an amazing time making a traditional Nepalese knife. The family and guide were very welcoming and it was fun talking and learning with them throughout the whole process. I got a hands on experience in all steps of the process while the experts made sure that each step finished with quality. Please don't miss out on a great experience to learn and participate in this traditional Nepalese knife making. It's a great way to give back to the local community and learn and experience the knife making process. Lifelong souvenir!

I thought the knife would be like a toy. I got a full size super sharp knife and it is really made from scratch! Love the experience.

Fun experience with right balance of interactivity / getting to work the knife myself vs. getting to observe the blacksmith, Indra, in his craft. Both the guide and Indra were professional and provided cheery company and conversation (I ended up being the only one for my time slot). It was great getting to go to an actual workshop and be able to get my hands dirty.

Great experience with my tour guide. Picked me up from my hotel and took me to the home of a well-experienced Blacksmith. He'd been doing this for many years crafting to local residents and personal requests. All material used has been recycled (except for brass which is hard to come by). Finished with a Nepalese souvenir which I can use (with a '100 year guarantee')

Great experience with my tour guide. Picked me up from my hotel and took me to the home of this experienced Blacksmith. He's being doing this for many years crafting for tourists or local residents. Repurposes all the material used in the creation of the Khukuri. Finished with a Nepalese souvenir which I can use (with a 100 year guarantee :D ).
