We have been sailing to the iconic Maori Rock Carvings since 1982!
This all-year-round activity offers relaxation, fun and adventure on the water, the Kiwi way. Get right up close to this culturally significant 46 foot (14m) high rock art.
Excellent, amusing and current commentary on lake, the volcanics and the carvings. Free refreshments including tea, coffee, hot chocolate and mulled wine (winter only). We are licenced but you are welcome to bring your own. BYO
Swimming is encouraged.
Sail Barbary is the only boat in Taupo rated 'Qualmark Gold' by Tourism NZ under the 'sustainable business' category.

What to Bring: Dress casual, comfortable and warm (layered clothes work best), windproof/showerproof jacket, swimwear and towel (during summer), sunglasses, hat and don’t forget your camera!
Please note: You are welcome to bring your own prepared food and beverages. NZ law requires adults to be R18 and over to drink alcohol.
All departures are subject to demand, minimum numbers, lake and weather conditions. We reserve the right to transfer customers to an alternative boat should weather conditions allow it. This will not alter the tour route or inclusions.

5.00This boat ride to see the beautiful lake Taupo and Maori carvings was fantastic. The boat was beautiful, very comfortable, and 100% electric / green which was a great way to experience the tranquility of the lake. The host was kind, knowledgeable, and funny, and he shared stories and facts about the surrounding area. The complimentary local beer was also delicious. We highly recommend going with this company over others in the marina if you want a relaxing, authentic way to experience the waters of Lake Taupo!

5.00We had an enjoyable afternoon sailing trip with perfect weather and a skillful skipper. The boat was steady, and everything was well arranged. Wine and beer were included, making our 2.5-hour journey even better. Thank you for providing such a great experience that made our New Zealand trip special.

5.00Guide is a genuine bloke who is a great chat, knows the area really well. Sail boat is gorgeous, had to talk myself out of buying one myself. Guide does everything in his power to ensure everyone is happy and comfortable including insulated padded ponchos, tea, coffee, toilet eg. Carvings themselves were great and it was just awesome to be out on the lake, havnt had that kind of peace in a while.

5.00On the day of my tour, the weather was terrible. I was very concerned that the tour would be cancelled due to the nature of a sail boat but I instead received a message to say that we would be taking a different boat instead. I really appreciated that we were still able to go despite the weather. The captain was friendly and had that classic kiwi humour. Throughout the trip he told a few stories and also shared some facts about Lake Taupo and of course the Māori rock carvings. Would definitely recommend this tour.

5.00This sailing adventure was fabulous! The electric sailboat was comfortable and it was great that it is such a green form of transport. It was very interesting to learn about the ecology of the lake and the efforts that have been made to restore it to a healthy state. Chris was a very skilled and personable host. His expertise as a sailor and his obvious passion for sailing was wonderful and we felt very safe with him at the helm of the boat. The Māori rock carvings were interesting but there is so much more to the lake and explaining about the volcano, river system, and geology was equally, if not more fulfilling. It would be good to add more details about the vital place of the lake to the sustainability of the regions people, including farmers, businesses, and Māori. All in all, a great experience that we would highly recommend to visitors.
