Morioka Hachimangu

Morioka Hachimangū is a Shinto shrine in the city of Morioka, Iwate in northern Japan. The shrine is noted for its annual festival on the second Saturday in June, which is famous for the Chagu Chagu Umakko, a horse parade which was recognized in 1978 as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property.

Morioka Castle Ruins

One of the main tourist attractions in the city is Morioka Castle Ruins Park, the grounds where Morioka Castle once stood. The castle was demolished in 1874 and left to waste. However, in 1906 the site was cleaned up and renamed Iwate Park. It is a popular recreation area for the locals and a popular cherry blossom spot.

We had a wonderful experience with Toshi in Morioka! He was extremely communicative and went above and beyond to help us with restaurant reservations around the city. He also prepared thoughtful pamphlets that made the tour more informative and enjoyable!

Really enjoyed the handicraft center, particularly the ironworks and the indigo dye area. Be prepared to take a bus and possibly taxi depending on where your hotel is, as the sites involve 20-25 minute walks between and the handcraft center is out of town.

Toshi-san is a very knowledable guide with insights into many varied subjects. Before the tour we got to really good opportunity to fine tune the walking tours itinerary. And after the tour we got an good collection of information for our continued stay in Morioka. Very much appreciated!

Toshi exchanged Emails with us prior to our event and we discussed where to visit. After visiting the shrine and historic castle riuns, we had a great tine making our own noodles for lunch, and our own rice crackers for dessert.
