Isola di Murano
The enchanting islands of Murano and Burano are the perfect change of pace from Venice’s crowded streets and waterways. And the perfect way to reach them is by private water taxi. Faster and sturdier than a gondola, nimbler and less crowded than a waterbus, water taxis are the premier way to travel in Venice. Few visitors get to experience them, but yours is included, along with an expert local guide who’ll explain Venice’s history as a titan of trade along the way. Your first port of call is a specially chosen glassblowing workshop on Murano. In the Middle Ages, only Murano’s artisans possessed the secrets of this craft, and sharing them was punishable by execution. You’ll get to witness modern glassblowers wield those once secret techniques, shaping delicate and dazzling works of art from molten glass. Then admire the workshop’s finest work in its gallery, and perhaps take home a piece of your own – with a tour discount. Or explore more of Murano, including its peaceful canals and stunning Byzantine church.
The locals of nearby Burano still maintain the island’s tradition of handmade lace, some of the finest anywhere in the world. You’ll get to observe lace being hand-stitched the way it has been for generations. Then visit the lace museum to see the island’s greatest work, or simply enjoy the photo opportunity provided by the colorful houses, brightly painted so sailors could see home as they returned from the sea. When you cross the lagoon back to Venice, you’ll have a renewed appreciation of the crafts that put the city on the map so long ago.

We enjoyed our tour guide, Silvia, she has lots of tips about what to see and do in Venice. Much if the time is spent traveling on the boat, Silvia pointed out many i terseting sights.

A very worthwhile trip but with some odd context! Our guide Serena, was very imformative and provided a running commentary during the boat passages. We arrived in Murano for the glass making experience which was only 10 minutes in length. We watched a master glass maker make a tumbler, then a small horse statute. The glass was already made in a molten state - so we didn't actually see them making glass. The artistry was fanstastic and he showed great skill. This factory specialised in making very ornate chandeliers. After our brief demonstration, we went into their museum/shop. We understood that Murano glass was expensive but this shop really didn't cater for us budget minded travellers. We were led to believe that only Murano factories could produce Murano glass and that it was only available on the island and not in the shops. TOP TIP - after your glass making experience, take the time to wander to the shops in marina, they have very well priced Murano glass for sale and they actually have micro-furnaces for making their own works. We then embarked for Burano to see the dying art of Burano lace making. The journey to the island was very informative and boat ride in the bright January sunshine was excellent. When we arrived at the island, we saw straight away that the houses were very colourful and a sight to behold. Our troupe of travellers made our way to a distinguished lace making shop. We admired the skill of one of the last remaining lace master in Burano. After the demonstration, we walked around the tiny island admiring the colourful houses; the selection of shops and restaurants, and the overall atmosphere. We preferred Burano to Murano, but that's just our opinion! TOP TIP - find your way into the many alleys and side roads off of the main street; there you will find more houses to be admired and some local gardens.

Transport to the islands in a lovely private boat. Tour Guide Romie was helpful and informative. Would definitely recommend if you want to visit Murano and Burano. Lace making demo was lame, but Burano was lovely little town.

It was a great day out - Elly was an excellent tour guide; with lots of interesting and useful information shared on the boat ride. We enjoyed the glass blowing demonstration on Murano, but LOVED the time in Burano! Such a colourful town, and had the best carbonara at the resting with yellow tablecloths!!

This tour takes you in a boat along with 20 other people to the islands of Murano and Burano. The lace work and the glass factory show and tell is only 5-10 minutes each. Rest of the time is for you to explore by yourself. This you can easily accomplish by touring these island with public ferries for a fraction of the price. So needless to say this is an extremely overpriced tour for what they offer - they only offer transportation. We were not impressed with our tour guide Raquele/Rachel, who overly shared her own personal story rather than sharing more about the islands and Venice giving an actual tour. The audio system on the boat is bad, so it was hard to hear what the tour guide is saying. After dropping to the islands you’re on your own for an hour to two. Our tour guide did her own thing and did not narrate on the islands. We hoped she would share history and culture and provide more “tour guide style information”, but this is not the tour. We realized we overpayed for the experience. You do not really need a tour guide to tour the islands and you can just take public ferries for a fraction of the price. If you prefer to have someone coordinate your transportation, then book this tour- good part was they were communicative about pickup and departure details.
