  • We had a wonderful guide...

We had a wonderful guide on this tour. It makes for a very long day, and our group was maxed at 16 - which makes for a tight tour van. The air conditioning in the van worked great at the front - but past about row two, the stale heat was nearly unbearable. Our guide made an extra stop in the afternoon just so folks could purchase cold water from a local store. Definitely think twice about this tour if the weather is anything other than cold out (though maybe the same considerations would apply to the heater?) Otherwise, the tour makes many more stops than Viator’s summary. We stopped at Slain’s castle, which was quite neat, particularly in the fog, and was an easy 20ish minute walk from the car park. Then we stopped at the site to see puffins, which offered beautiful views of the coast and a collapsed sea cave, requiring a 10ish minute walk through some thick bushes. If seeing puffins is a goal, definitely consider bringing binoculars, as they will be far enough away that without binoculars, it’s hard to tell them apart from the gulls. There are no binoculars to rent/borrow/share from the tour company - so bring your own. From there it seems like we stopped a handful of times maybe for bathroom breaks? It is blurring together as we just kept wishing the tour would continue so we could meaningfully get out of the cramped bus. Eventually we arrived in Cullen, and the tour made us reservations at a restaurant for lunch. They crammed us in to a small room with too many chairs around small tables (or at least the chairs were just too tall for the table height) - we are average sized people and couldn’t comfortably fit our legs under the table. The food was mediocre to poor - including the famous Cullen Skink - but at a price point that suggested higher quality. A very mediocre ice cream shop was also recommended - nothing home made or fresh there, though it was priced accordingly. If we had it to do over, we should have preferred to skip the organized lunch in favor of finding our own elsewhere on a smaller scale - it is a cute looking town, but lunch for a large group took so long that we hardly had time to look around. Next was a stop at bow fiddle rock formation which was a nice coastal walk, and mostly flat with an open foot path and many benches along the way. From there we continued up along the coast and stopped very briefly in several small coastal villages- basically long enough to get out and take a photo. It made for a lot of climbing in and out of the crowded, hot van, which seemed to just drag the whole thing out. We turned back after seeing some grey harbor seals (very neat). Throughout the trip, a soundtrack of music by Scottish artists (the singer from Sweet Dreams is from Aberdeen, cool) played, including the “red hot chili pipers” who covered popular songs with bagpipes. This was really neat at first, but on repeat all day gets a bit old. Overall, our guide was a super nice guy and it was clear he was trying to make the most of it and give everyone the best possible tour in spite of the hot packed van. It was just a really really long day. I think if we had to do it again, I’d rather rent a car for the day and do our own little tour at our own pace, with the option to control AC/open a window. Wikipedia was our information source along the way as it was, so a phone signal and a map would about have it covered.

Great way to see the North East, learn the history and local stories. The weather and natural surroundings were spectacular and the Puffins did not disappoint.
