  • Loved the scenery; the guide drove well, but his facts were severely lacking

Overall, the tour was fine, but I was underwhelmed. A lot of that had to do with the guide's increasingly outlandish claims. Good things: - Scheduling flexibility. They let us re-schedule on short notice (within a couple hours of the tour starting), which I hugely appreciated. I was ill the night before the tour and figured I'd have to call it a loss because their cancellation policy didn't allow so late of a change, but they were flexible and responsive when texted and I was able to go on the tour a few days later. - Reliable. The driver arrived ten minutes before start time in a van with the logo, exactly per the instructions. The instructions were well written. - Freedom to explore. I did not think we'd be allowed to walk on the rocks because of the 'no climbing' policy but the guide let us wander around the sites and walk on and up the sandstone mounds, which was the best part and a lot of fun. - Good driving. There were a couple gnarly areas of the playa-and-rock road that made me nervous but the guide drove with confidence and I trusted his ability to make it up the rocky paths. - A pretty and unique area. Though not iconic like Monument Valley, the scenery felt otherworldly. - The guide, Will, was friendly and talkative and had all sorts of stories. - The ruin was pretty cool. The pottery shards were kind of interesting. Neutral things: - I wanted the open-air vehicle but my companion wanted the closed vehicle, so this is a personal preference. Granted, we went in winter, so it was sub-40 degrees when we started and I could see wanting to be in a warm van. (The other tour group we saw was in open air.) - I didn't see any arches, though maybe I had to hike farther? The rock was pretty steep, so I didn't climb very high. Bad things: - The promised toilet at the visitor center was locked. That was a disappointment as we had driven quite a ways and needed to use the facilities. We were directed to a gas station a couple miles away which, luckily, was serviceable (I'm picky about public toilets) but I was irritated that the guide couldn't get it unlocked for us. - No flute playing. Maybe I am misremembering, but I thought there would be a flute. Could have been a different company offering that. In any case, I did not feel the 'spiritual peace' that was suggested by the website. (The website could also use an uplift. I was depending on another tour group's website to have a detailed idea of what to expect on the Mystery Valley tour.) - The petroglyphs were kind of lame. It was like 'oh, up there might be a goat' among the modern graffiti. - The guide, Will Cowboy, talked non-stop for almost the entire 3.5-hour tour. At first, I thought it was because he had so much good information to impart that he wished to convey as much as possible. But after the first excellent hour, his claims of all the amazing things the Navajo had done became more and more outlandish. He contradicted himself often, was inconsistent about what message he was trying to convey, said many things that were erroneous, and many more that were outright false when I fact checked him later. At the end, he went on for maybe fifteen minutes, repeating himself, talking about how the Navajos don't intermarry among clans and, incredulously, knew what DNA was before scientists. (Yes, it's a good play on words, but by that point, I didn't believe a word he said.) I was kind of wondering if he was killing time because it seemed we did not make as many stops as I was expecting. We only made three stops that I recall (the Skull rock, the Pancake rocks, and the Ruin) which was fewer than mentioned in the description. In the internet age, information is democratized. So a lot of this 'information suppression' he claimed should no longer be an issue. If it is, he'll need to make that case a LOT better and without relying on misconceptions. Point me to the post in the Navajo subreddit at the very least, then we'll talk.

Sean was incredible. A fantastic history lesson. Seeing the cliff dwellings so close was a wonderful opportunity. Especially nice for mobility challenged seniors.

Highly recommend Garry Holiday, our Navajo tour guide. He is the elder of the family who runs this tour company. Garry is deeply knowledgeable and deeply spiritual in presenting the Navajo culture. Stunning scenery and special service by Garry.

The tour was in an adjacent area to Monument Valley. We were able to get up close to petroglyphs, First People granaries, an arch and pancake rocks. The guide also offered an insight in to Navajo life – very interesting.

We took several tours of Monument Valley. Navajo Spirit was by far the best. In fact, it was the best tour we've ever taken including Stonehenge and Pompeii. Our guide Gary who founded the company was extremely informative about the history and culture of the Navajo people. He helped us climb to an alcove which would have been difficult without aid. He sang Dine songs, accompanying himself with drum and guitar. He also played a beautiful Navajo flute made by his son. IF YOU TAKE ONE TOUR of Monument Valley MAKE IT NAVAJO SPIRIT.

There are no words to adequately describe the life changing experience we had with Gary on our mini-retreat into the sacred Mystery Valley. My friends and I are spiritual seekers and alternative healing therapists. We were divinely guided to Gary and to Navajo Spirit Tours and the experience exceeded our expectations. Gary took us on an unforgettable journey. We connected with our animal totems and experienced a sacred connection to the ancient Anasazi people that inhabited the land centuries ago. Gary interlaced tradition, ceremony and history throughout the tour and it was simply perfect. After the tour, Gary's wife Michelle cooked us the most fabulous traditional Navajo dinner of fry bread with beef brisket and we were able to get a peek at their renovations of their upcoming new gift shop and gallery inside of an old trading post they are restoring. The clay techniques they were using to restore the building were amazing. My friends and I spent 10 days total in the South West, but our 4 hours with Gary is the memory we will take with us for a lifetime.

This was my second excursion with Navajo Spirit Tours. The first was in 2023, with Garry Holiday as our guide. Just like her father, Syreea (I hope I’ve spelled that correctly) is an outstanding guide. Knowledgeable, entertaining, with a great personality, she is also an excellent driver, which on those back roads is a critical skill. We couldn’t ask for a better guide to an area I was not at all familiar with. She told us much about the Anasazi people, the culture of the Diné, as well as the composition of the sandstone… i.e., the difference between hard and soft sandstone, something I was not aware of. Thank you to all of the Holidays, including Miesha, who has a smile that you can hear in her voice on the phone. I will recommend Navajo Spirit Tours to any of my friends and acquaintances who will be traveling to Monument Valley.

  • Outstanding experience - Private Tour

We took a private all day tour, Mystery Valley and Monument Valley. Larsen Homer was our outstanding tour guide. Larsen is easy to talk with, funny, and blends Navajo lore and culture, learned from his grandmother and mother, into his commentary. He is very observant and quickly picked up our interest in pottery, dwellings and wall art and tailored our tour taking us to places normally not visited. The beauty of Monument Valley and surroundings speak for themselves. Having a Navajo guide speak to the beauty above, the beauty below, and beauty to the sides makes this an especially terrific and worthwhile experience. Larsen even managed to have two 🌈 at the mittens when we left the park. What more could you ask for.
