We will leave Cusco (3350m/10,990 ft) at 530am by a tourist bus heading for the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Before we reach our starting point of the hike, km 82, we will take a short break in Ollantaytambo for having the option to get breakfast. The official beginning of the Inka Trail is called km 82. Here we will meet the rest of the group and take care of the registration facilities. After crossing the Rio Urubamba (2200m), we will start the legendary Inca Trail. The first day the trail is an easy walk and a good warm up for the following days. In Miskay, we’ll have lunch on a small river bank while getting some information about the archeological complex of Llactapata. Afterwards, we will continue our hike to Wayllabamba (3100m/10,170 ft) and ascend to Yuncachimpa (3300m/10,826 ft). We will pitch our camp site for the night here. From the site, we have a great view of the mysterious Nevado de Veronica.
The second day is the ‘Free-Hike-Day’ which means that everybody should walk at his or her own pace. We will all meet up either at our breaks or gather at the stairs. Early in the morning, we will find that the trail first leads through the Valley of Llulluchapampa (3850m/12,631 ft). The first 3km are steps – enjoy the humid woodlands and the sounds of flowing water or waterfalls. From Llulluchapampa, we will follow the trail for 2 -3 hrs. until you reach the highest point of this section of the hike called Warmihuanusca Pass (Dead Woman’s Pass) (4200m/11,378 ft). This climb is known as the most difficult part of the Inca Trail. After a short break at the summit, we continue our hike down with the long and steep descent to the river Pacaymayo (Sunrise River) towards the Runkurakay pass (3050m/10,007 ft) until you reach our camping site called Chaquicocha at (3650m/11,975 ft). Here you can relax your body from the tough day while enjoying an amazing view over the mountains.
Winay Wayna
The third day is the most beautiful one. You can notice a change in the eco-system while walking to the tropical forest of Winay Wayna. We will pass two small lakes at the top of the second pass (3950m). It’s a gentle climb through the clouds, beautiful forest, and a small Inca tunnel before the third pass (3700m). From here, we get a spectacular view over the Rio Urubamba Valley. The nearest settlement is named Phuyupatamarca (“Town above the clouds”) at 11,811 ft. This well preserved site boasts a long chain of Inca baths that impressively displays the practicality of their ancient engineering. We pass another Inca Tunnel before visiting the ruins of Winay Wayna (“Forever young”) at 8,694 ft. The Inca stairs change into a zigzag trail until you reach the red-roofed white building. We will camp here as our last site since this location has hot water and bottled drinks.
After our early breakfast at 430am, we will head equipped with flashlights to the Inti Punku (Sun Gate) to get the first glimpse of Machu Picchu and watch the sunrise over Machu Picchu and Wayna Picchu. The last triumphal decent will take you almost one hour before we visit the citadel of Machu Picchu (2400m/7,874 ft) around 8am. You can enjoy its spiritual charm during a guided tour, which is about 2 hours, that helps you to understand an ancient use of the different buildings. After this tour, you will have enough time to explore the archeological sites on you own – explore the Inca Bridge, the many ruins, or climb Wayna Picchu for amazing photos. When you’re ready, a nice bus will take you back down to Aguas Calientes. Relax your muscles from all the exploring in the hot springs there. In the afternoon, we will leave Aguas Calientes for Cusco.

Had a truly great experience with Discover Inca Planet! We did the classic 4-day Inca Trail, spent some time in the Sacred Valley -- seeing things like the Inca Temple of the Sun outside Ollantaytambo and the Moray salt mines -- spent a day exploring some amazing places in and around Cusco. Finally, we capped things off with a Vinicunca trek. Everything was truly fantastic from beginning to end. Our guide, Abraham, was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, kind, and hardworking. We had a few circumstances that complicated our trip, but he always found a way to adjust our itinerary to make sure we didn't miss a thing. He taught us a lot about everything we saw. Because of him, we learned what we were seeing weren't just gorgeous views and impressive ruins; instead we got to understand something of their amazing history and significance. I also have to mention that Abraham and Discover Inca Planet work with some really great people who made our trek on the Inca Trail an experience I could never have imagined. We traveled with an amazing team of porters and even a chef who made us three delicious meals a day. This company is great, and Peru is gorgeous. If you can, I recommend you travel to this amazing country! And I would happily recommend Discover Inca Planet to anyone traveling to the mountains of Peru.

Just got off of one of the best weeks of my life! We started visiting Ollantaytambo town, where we saw the Inca ruins in the town and learned about the history. The next four days we hiked the Inca trail and landed at Machu Picchu—a true bucket list item. Once we got back to Cusco, we packed the next two days with as much as we could: things like visits to the Maras Salt mines, Qorikancha, and Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain). We also tried to eat as many regional delicacies as we could, including chicharrones and Guinea pig. I did not really know what I was getting into with the Inca Trail. Thankfully, everything was thought out for us. We had our tour guide (Abraham), a chef, and four porters. Every night we had our tent set up for us and three (multi-course!) meals a day were prepared for us. I ate better on those four days camping than I normally do at home. And our porters were badass and so helpful, setting up camp, assisting the chef, and carrying many of our belongings. Finally, I need to credit the man who made this all possible: Abraham. Before we got to Peru, he was available to answer questions that we may have and provided us with a detailed itinerary and packing list. I felt fully prepared as I left Peru knowing that I packed what I needed to make this trip a success. Abraham was deeply knowledgeable and passionate about the Inca culture and history. Many times as we were driving back from somewhere, he would say, “There’s a great Inca site up here. Would you like to stop?” Our answer was always yes. He was also incredibly encouraging as I hiked the Inca Trail. I would recommend Peru and specifically Discover Inca Planet to anyone who likes amazing food, history, hiking, gorgeous vistas, and good times.

A once in a lifetime experience! We are so happy that we did this trek with Discover Inca Planet! We had an amazing time hiking, admiring the spectacular views, and learning about the Incas. We also felt safe and well taken care of by our amazing porters, cook, and, of course, our guide Jimmy. Jimmy is very knowledgeable about the trail, the Inca civilization, and Peru. We learned a lot and would definitely recommend the 4 day trek to everyone!
