5.00Who knew learning a game could feel like unlocking the soul of a city? Spending a morning in Chengdu People’s Park, fumbling through Sichuan mahjong with a bunch of locals and our amazing guide, was hands down the most “Chengdu” thing I’ve ever done—and I’m obsessed. First off, the park itself is a vibe. Our guide plopped us down at a bamboo table under a big tree, ordered us jasmine tea, and said, “Let’s make you mahjong pros—no stress, just fun.” Perfect start. Sichuan mahjong’s trickier than I thought (those “gang” and “pong” calls! The way you have to discard tiles with a little *snap*—so satisfying once you get the hang of it), but our guide broke it down like a pro. The locals at the next table cheered when I finally won a round (okay, maybe they felt bad for the foreigner, but still), and our guide high-fived me like we’d been friends forever. Between turns, we sipped tea, watched a guy walk by with a birdcage, and talked about how this game’s not really about winning—it’s about sitting, chatting, and letting the day drift by. Chengdu’s “chill” isn’t just a buzzword—it’s in the way people take time to enjoy the small stuff. If you want to feel this city, skip the tourist traps. Best class I’ve ever taken.
