Trains leave Ella station at 6.40 am & 9.24 am and reaches Kandy station after 6 - 6 1/2 hours. Travelers are free to get down at different stations on the way if they wish to do so (Nuwaraeliya, Hatton, Peradeniya etc). All the seats are provided from 2nd , 3rd or 1st Class reserved compartments (We always give try to allocate from 2nd class) . To proceed, please provide all original passengers passport numbers...This is a requirement for the e-ticket, as authorities may check it during the journey. Please ensure you keep the e-ticket secure and do not share it with anyone.

3.00The train journey used to be a real highlight: you sat with the locals, got into conversation with them, the doors were open and not besieged....nowadays, on the other hand, it is already an art to get a ticket, the trains are full, only with tourists and unfortunately some of the mostly young people are not respectful or very assertive when they sit in wrong seats. I think the charm of this ride is gone.

5.00We used Mahaweli Tours & Holidays to book our train tickets from Kandy to Ella, as well as all our private transfer vans around the island for our group of 6–8. Everything was perfectly organised – very reliable, always punctual, and they even messaged us the night before each transfer to confirm pickup times. Communication was super easy via WhatsApp, and responses were always quick. The prices were very fair, and the drivers were excellent – safe, friendly, and dependable. A special mention to Sachin, who was fantastic. A big thank you to Bawantha, who helped us arrange everything so smoothly. Highly recommend this company if you want stress-free travel around Sri Lanka!

5.00The train takes what it takes in our case 7h, but the views are wonderful and you can eat inside (1000lkr) a chicken rice and curry. There is a bar inside to catch drinks, but at some stop you can get off and catch in the little shops in the station if they seem expensive

5.00We used this one because we couldn't get an internet reservation because it was full. Until the day before, I was a little worried about everything, not even knowing the seats, but they were kind enough to communicate with me and I received my e-ticket without any problems. I thought it was a shame to sit in second class, It opens the window so you can take pictures beautifully. It was a great answer. We had a very satisfying train trip 🩷

5.00The tickets were booked through a brokerage company (Mahaweli Tours) and then sent via WhatsApp a month before departure. Everything worked out very well.

5.00While more expensive than buying directly, Mahaweli tours made the bookings for us which overcame the challenge of the train becoming fully booked within moments of tickets becoming available. We were initially worried about not booking directly with the railway, but it worked out very well and Geesara’s communication with us was excellent throughout, always answering our questions very quickly.
